Stolen yorkies, Are they covered under homeowners policy
 
I was reading the thread where someone had their yorkies stolen from their home. I was just wondering if that would be covered under your homeowners insurance.

I realize, you have lost more than money, and they cannot be replaced, but at least one could cover their monetary value.

I'm not an insurance person but, I wouldn't think so...I know in order for you to be able to collect from your insurance you have to have it listed...like your jewerly and such...I would say living things probably aren't able to be insursed.

My nephew was bitten by a dog in the dogs own home and his mother was told she could sue the owners as the house insurance would cover it!!! So i would think if you can claim for that you should be able to claim for the dog too

That is a wonderful question....... and if they aren't covered, can you put coverage on them through a homeowners policy by paying extra?

Dog bites are covered under homeowners insurance but, if the dog bites again they will have to get rid of the dog or their insurance can be cancelled..


Homeowners insurance covers injuries in the persons home...this would fall under that...but, I do not believe they would cover a stolen animal..They would have to be added to the policy as a possession and I don't think dogs would fall into that category...(I know they belong to us and are our possession but it would be like stealing a child...your insurance wouldn't cover them)I would call the insurance company but, I think I'm right on this one.

I work for my mother in law and she owns her own insurance agency, and your homeowners policy should Not cover it ... it depends on what you have insured and what your coverages are ... what company do you have ??

I do not believe that it covers a "stolen" dog unless you specify that when the policy is written. I have to have "extra" coverage for special items like collector pieces such as "charming tails" and of course jewelry is something you have to "add on" under your policy. So I would think that if you personally included your dog in the policy (and it would up your cost), the dog would be covered but I am certain it is not automatic!!! Even my husband's small oil lamp collection is not covered since we did not inclue it for "extra" coverage. So contents in an insurance policy does not automatically include everything in the house. And some insurance companies will NOT insure you if you have certain breed dogs.

they usually insure the smaller breeds, its not usually the larger breeds, but it really depends on the company you have .

Many of the pet insurance companies cover lost or stolen dogs as well as the vet expenses. It is often an extra rider which may cost more. Some just cover it with there standard package.
