Changing her food didn't work! All Gracie does is scratch. I changed her shampoo and conditioner. Didn't work. Changed her food to something with no byproducts or corn, didn't work. Any other suggestions? |
Allergy Medicine My dog would scratch & lick her poor little feet, and would get ear rashes. I tried everything, and finally the vet prescribed Cyclosporine, which solved the problem. It's less expensive if you get the prescription filled through internet pharmacies than if you buy it right from the vet. |
Our Sailor was struggling with scratching also and we added some Salmon Oil to her diet on recommendation from our vet. That has helped, but if it did not the vet suggested we begin using a shampoo with benadryl. (Must be purchased at the vet's office.) With the new puppy addition to our house, we switched the new pup and Sailor to a new food and left Magic on her special food for her tummy....and we stopped the Salmon Oil....and Sailor is better than ever. I really think is is trial and error....but get your vets input also! (I would call and avoid the actual office visit is possible....we did.) |
It can take 6-8 weeks on the right diet for the itching/scratching to go away. How long has she been on the new food? |
Only a week. I guess I should give it longer. |
A friend of mine owns a pet store (does not sell puppies!) She was telling me that her little girl was having skin problems too...she was very itchy and had little bumps on her skin...she change her to a raw diet and the problems went away...I just change the girls from Nutro Ultra to Canidae only because the Nutro didn't get very good ratings. She also gave me 9 chunks of the raw food to try...I am a little apprehensive giving them raw food...I have to do some research on this first...something about the word "raw" just doesn't sound good to me...but, she swears by it...it can be expensive though... Graice has the same problem, in fact it has flared up just this week. Gracie had hives that became infected from excess scratching, poor thing. She has been put on Temaril for the itcing, a cortisoothe bath 3 times a week, and antibiotics for the infections. She already eats venison food so a change in diet was not in order. My vet says until we get a good cold spell and some snow here in NJ she will continue to scratch. We are just trying to manage it and keep her comfortable. |
I'm only going by my own experience with this - but when Chanel played in the hose almost every day one summer - her skin got itchy & she scratched alot for a day or 2...I bought some Veternarians Best Moisture Mist SKIN Conditioner - within 24 hours she had stopped scratching. It's not for the coat - but it says it is - it's for their skin and it really helped her. PetCo sells it for about 8$ a bottle |
What food did you switch her to? Jazzie had the same problem and I put her on Natural Balance Duck & Potato it helped alot but took about a month before I saw any changes. I also give Jazzie antihestimine on days where the pollen is high. Jazzie was taken to a veterinary dematologist and was tested for allergies, because of her test results, we took out all carpeting and switched our bedding to the hypoallergic ones.
