Happy to find you.. Hi and Happy Holidays! Duchess my furbaby and I just found your forum while looking for help with her toe nails. We live in chilly Vermont. But Duchy has lots of jackets and sweaters and boots she hates to wear, that keep her warm, thank goodness. Her toe nails grow so fast and I'm so upset I have let them get too long. Now we must tackle them. Any suggestions? She makes herself sick every time I cut them, now I'm not sure what to do to regain control and get them cut to a reasonable length without too much discomfort for her. (impossible) ANy ideas appreciated. |

Sometimes if you take them to a stranger - like your VET to cut - it's much easier on them - I don't know what it is about yorkies and their toenails but mine have a hissy fit too - I wrap them in a towel and take out one foot at a time - if it takes me a few days then it's ok - but I'll take them to my vet and he can cut them in less than 3 minutes - each girl - they charge about 5$ or free if I'm there for a real visit. |
Welcome to YT!! I agree with Villette, I take both of mine to the groomer to get their nails cut. It's easier on them (and me) since Simon doesn't like to sit still for me. Good Luck and...... Happy Holidays! |
See, there is always someone here ready to help. Welcome to you and your baby. Happy Holidays, Carol & Buddy:aimeeyork |

Hello and welcome! I have taken Maizee to the vet to get her nails done, but now she hates the vet. I'm slowly working her back up to it. I usually just trim hers a little bit so they aren't so long and if you take them on walks, that will file their nails down for you :) That's my lazy man approach |
Hi and welcome to YT!! Seems to be a common problem with trimming nails, as we battle this one too. I can usually get 2-3 of them trimmed right after Ruby's bath, when she is wrapped in a towel. So, it can take a couple of weeks or more to get them all done, lol. Otherwise, the groomer or vet does it for us during regular visits. The thing is - if I had been diligent about trimming nails, as I was about hair brushing I don't think it would have been a problem. The first time she pulled away from me, trimming nails, I buckled and let her have her way, I shouldn't have!!!! |
:welcome4: to YT. We're so glad you found us, too! I would suggest your vet, also; or a groomer if you find a good one you can trust. We take both ours' to our vet for nail trims. It's worth the $17 (yes, seventeen dollars - each!) to let someone else do it rather than stress over maybe hurting Abigail when she squirms during a "hissy fit" ;). |
Thanks Wow that was fast!! Thanks again. I like the towel idea. Someone told me if you clipped them, then a week or so later clipped them a bit more and so on that the quick can gradually grow back further. Does anyone know if that's true |
Welcome to YorkieTalk! :D Glad to have you here!! I take my little guy to our vet and have them clip his nails - cost $5 bucks ;) MUCH easier than ME even ATTEMPTING to do it (I won't even try!) :p |

Its true. The quick will go in further as you gradually cut their nails. Mine is a wriggly boy too when I cut his nails so I either do it when he is really tired and sleeping after a good play with another puppy. Just hold his leg firmly so that he doesn't pull away and hurt himself as you are cutting it. Sometimes I get my husband to hold him after bathing him so his nails are softer and easier to cut and he doesn't fuss as much about it. |
Welcome to the wonderful world of yorkies, all in all these lil ones have issues with their feet. I groom and still have to take a couple of mine to the Vets for nails. But, I've found that if I hold them in my lap and get hubby to rub their heads it goes a lil easier, not perfect, but easier. |
My groomer uses a dremel (sic). And has them filed in moments, I think as long as it is done consistently, they won't get too long and will be easily done. |
Mine haaaaate it. I thought they would eventually get used to it, but so far, no go. :( I bathe them weekly, and try to cut at least one nail on each foot at that time. It's frustrating never getting them all "done", but I'm too cheap to pay someone else to do it! ($5 though....THAT I would give! :p) After each nail they let me do, I give them a tiny treat, such as a cheerio. I don't either scold, or do a lot of baby talking....I mostly just get down to business, and then give the loving at the end when we're done. Welcome, and good luck! |
