Chewy...Here's the scoop!

Chewy is a Lap dog first thing in the morning and at night while we watch tv... he is independent during the day, meaning he follows me around until I call him, he doesn't come unless a treat is involved!:D
He was potty trained by 4 months.( got him at 3 months) :cheer:

He sleeps throught the night, and is lazy in the morning!

He is very funny, and we crack up all the time because he is such a nut... he loves to play with toys, and he is just the sweetest little love, but here a few of the tough things we deal with!

He is very busy, always on the hunt looking for lint, food or any thing else on the floor he can find... and he swallows anything he gets into... so floors have to be REALLY REALLY CLEAN!:dogsm6:

He will chew on wicker or wood if he gets bored, he also will bite feet when bored... it's his way of saying hey play with me will ya!:yay_jump:

He has fear aggression. He is wonderful until you go to brush his teeth or clip his nails!!! He is getting better though so there is hope!

ok one more thing... He LOVEs to chase the cat!!! The cat is 15 pounds and he is 4 pounds... The cat is scared to death of him and he LOVES IT! But he tries to play with the cat and it isnt gonna happen. His fault completely!~ :confuse2:

The worse thing my Yorkie does is tear up kleenex, napkins and paper towels. She also likes to eat lip gloss and chew a hole in my eye drop bottle. She only destroyed one thing that I can recall when she was teething and that was she chewed a tassle off of one of my shoes. I think most puppies chew when they are teething and not just Yorkies. I have always kept a lot of stuffed squeeky toys for her and she loves to carry them around and squeek them. She loves to chew the eyes out of them and I don't mind because those are hers.

Oh yes, when she was a puppy she used to tug on your socks when you tried to put them on and she loved to get ahold of your gardening gloves and take off with them. She never chewed them up, but you wouldn't get them back until she got tired of running with them (and you had to act like you don't want them anymore). She is very very playful and wants to engage you in a spirited game of chase.

She has a lot of energy and is very independent and inquisitive. She will sit on your lap if she feels like it but ususally wants to sit next to you hugging your leg, or close by. She has calmed down energy-wise since she turned 3

Daisy is a fast learner and will do just about anything for a treat. She has been such a joy, I just love having a Yorkie.

How small is your staffie?

I only ask, because while yorkies can get along well with bigger dogs, they CAN be easily hurt by them. A large dog who even accidentally steps on a yorkie in play could do some damage. And staf. terriers are such SOLID dogs. I'm bringing this up because you said that yorkies are on your shortlist, so it sounds like you're trying to make the best decision for you and your family.

That being said, yorkies are awesome, big dogs in little bodies. As far as naughty behavior, Ginger eats paper. There is no longer any paper located anywhere below counter height in my house. Even then, we have to be sure there is nothing nearby she can climb to get to the counter:rolleyes:. You don't even want to know what it's like in my bathrooms :p

On the bright side, she's the worlds best cuddler.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Hi Colette - glad you finally got up the nerve to post! :wavey:

To be 'owned' by a Yorkie is a most exquisite experience :aimeeyork . Though there is a breed standard, we delight in how many sizes, coats and personalities in which this bundle of mischief comes packaged.

I think the hardest stage is during potty training. PERSISTENCE is key.

And wall chewing does seem to be on their agenda when teething. My Abbie actually chewed a hole in our kitchen door. Of course, it was water damaged, and that's how she was able to get that far; but, "yep" it has to be replaced.

I forgot to mentiion one other nasty thing about my Yorkie. She has a taste for bunny/duck/goose poop. She is now doing pretty good at leaving it alone since she knows the "leave it" command. I think she is now somewhat losing interest in this nasty habit. Big Yuck!!!

If you want a loving affectionate yorkie, that is good you're getting a male because I have always heard that males were more affectionate and females were more independant. As far as temperment, the best thing you can do is look at the parents and determine the temperment of the parents and then use that as a guide as to what the tempermanet of the puppies will be in that litter. Both of my yorkies came from the same parents. Both of their parents are very laid back...lap dogs. Neither of mine are hyperactive at all. They both love to cuddle. My male definately likes to cuddle more than my female. To prevent them from being destructive, they are both crate-trained and stay in a crate when they are left home alone or when they cannot be supervised. I would definately recommend that you get your male neutered as early as possible...around 4-5 months of age....this will prevent him from humping and marking his territory and will make him a much more loving pet. You will not regret getting a yorkie. They are by far the best breed out there in my opinion. Just do lots of research and find parents who have great temperments and you should be good to go!

I personally think it's wonderful that you are researching yorkies before owning one!

The most naughty thing Zoe has done is similar to above but I too feel it's cute most of the time.

CHasing undies, shredding paper, chewed on a book I had on the floor, didn't chew through walls. Is as smart and inquisitive as can be, likes to chase birds when we're out walking, figures out ways to climb out of her expen, learns very quickly short phrases, learns that the sound of a garage door opening means one of us is home, greets you with a wagging tail and kisses, is very independent at times and plays on her own as long as she knows where we are, is such a snuggle bug, will sit on my lap for only few things, hates missing out on the action in the house and has to be there front and center, is very good at alerting me when she hears sounds in the house, can be quite territorial and protective of us, is super friendly and comes up to people, loves to dig throught he trash, and like above, terribly hates nail clipping and teeth brushing, is like a child. But you will enjoy owning a yorkie so much as they will cease to make you laugh each and every day!

Thanks again, everyone! Your replies have all been very helpful (not to mention fun to read!). Note to self: if I get a yorkie, keep magazines and kleenex boxes up high! ;)

I'm not worried about being able to be dominant over a yorkie, since the dogs our family has now have dominant personalities and they definitely know I'm the boss lady. :p We actually have two dogs in the household, not just the staffie but a lab mix as well. And the staffie IS built like a tank! She's a runty one though, only 11" at the shoulder, and she was very gentle and mommy-like with our lab mix when he was just a 4 lb puppy. :) Our lab mix is about 3x her size and is a total doll baby. He isn't a submissive dog, but our little staffie is dominant over him, lol.

I realize that having a small dog with larger ones is not something to be undertaken lightly, as they will never be able to be together unsupervised. I thought long and hard about it, and considered a larger dog instead, but I am a very small person and really want a small dog of my own that I can easily handle. The price for it will be constant vigilance! As it is our dogs are only allowed in the living room and kitchen, but whatever little dog I get will be allowed in the other parts of the house as well with its crate in my bedroom.

And potty training . . . oh boy. It wasn't fun with the first two doggies and I wouldn't expect it to be with this one, lol. Bring on the crate and the x-pen!

Good advice about temperament, RLC12345678. Since yorkies aren't uncommon, I think I could afford to be picky like that. :aimeeyork
