I wonder why he is afraid of the floor? Since we've had Gizmo for the last few months I've realized he is scared to death of any flooring that is not carpeted. ESPECIALLY kitchens in any house I take him to, including our own. I wonder why that could be? He's 7 so it's not like he is a puppy experiencing something new... It's very wierd. |
Maybe he is feeling out of place with the floor being more slippery? Maybe now he prefers carpets because they have better grip under the foot? |
Weird...Josie hates being in the kitchen area (also floor). I always just thought she was weird like that. :p Nothings ever happened to her, : I think these little dogs are just weird like that  :aimeeyork |
Ben has never minded it and I don't think my other two dogs ever did either, but Sadie -- she would come to a screeching halt at the edge of the carpet. She actually cried looking at her food and water dish in the kitchen. So, of course, DH put an additional food and water dish on the carpet -- Big spoiler that he is. Sadie is gradually venturing out on the ceramic tile, but she does not like it. We figure it is because it is too slippery for her. She does lose her footing on it often. She came running down the hall the other day and got on the tile before she knew what she was doing. She tried to stop and instead slid about a foot or two. It was hilarious but she looked so pitiful that we felt guilty for laughing at the poor thing. She is a corker! |
what kind of floor do you have? Is it actual tile? Some little dogs don't like tile because it's too cold. |
Whoa that's so weird...I read the thread title, took my new baby downstairs to the hardwood floors and he started crying. Then I come back to read the post and its the same thing. Its probably just the breed, but then again the cold/slipperyness even gets on my nerves. |

Cesar Milan had a segment on his show about this. I think the dog was a doberman or some big black dog. Coulda been a Great Dane....LOL I don't remember. |
I watched one episode on Stanley Coren show too. Its an old lab that is not comfortable with wooden and hard floor because his nails weren't trimmed short enough and it made him uncomfortable walking on hard flooring. |

In any case, what I would do is scatter treats on the scary floors when he's not looking. When I wanted to give him a new toy, I'd leave it for him to find on the scary floor. IOW, I'd make those scary floors a great place for a dog to be! |
I have hardwood floors in the upstairs rooms of my house, which is where Maizee is most of the time. She was not fond of the hardwood floors either, because when she would try to take a running start at something, she would be running in place for a while and then fall over. She finally got the hang of it, but there still are times when she gets really excited and takes off running only to fall over shortly after. It's a pretty funny sight, but of course I have to run over and baby her. |
I have a similar problem..my dogs are scared to go in the basement..I don't know why...if you bring them down in your arms and your with them with all your attention they'll be fine but they won't just follow you down for some reason. They wait at cry at the top of the steps till i get back. What I did for one of them was(she follows me) Whenever I went down I took her with me..kinda showed her that theres nothing to be scared of. Maybe you could do that with him..just place him on the floors and maybe play with him in an area like that. |
