Big dogs living with our little guys Just curious, how many of you have larger dogs (50lbs +) living with your small breed dog? I might be getting a larger breed puppy soon, but don't want to risk injury to my little guys, so I thought I'd see how many of you have dealt with this. It seems like I remember one of you having a boxer and another having a standard poodle that lived harmoniously with your yorkies. Am I right? :) Thanks! |
my two dogs dont live inside with the yorkie but they do paly outside out back together and i havent had a problem yet but i never leave them alone with the furbaby, he weighs 3.5 pounds and my german shepard, and my husky weigh in around 65 and 55 each, but they play and they are really gentle but i introduced them slowly to each other with littel sniffs and then slowly started letting him go potty out there with them with me right by him but they just let him walk around their yard and sniff their landmines and it really helped with the training, but goo luck every dog is diferent, |
I have a Greyhound (80 lbs) along with several small breeds including my Yorkie. We have never had any problems but I NEVER leave them unattended together. I don't think Buddy would ever do anything to them, but I don't want to test that theory. Plus, he is sweet as he can be, but that won't matter if he accidentally steps on one of the Littles. |
My best friend had a 60-70 pound Boxer and a 4 pound Yorkie. They were best of friends. The big dog really knew her limits when playing with the little guy. I have my two Yorkies (3 and 8 pounds) along with a 30-40 pound lab mix. They absolutely adore each other. The littlest one is the feistiest. Coco (the lab) is very passive though, so that makes a big difference. |
me we do! i have 2 yorkies and a 100 +lb rottie but never leave them alone unattended just like children they can easily be hurt |
I have a german shepherd along with my yorkies and chi. The only real problem I had was Cash ran over precious causing her to hurt her back (shes totally healed now) she had to stay confined for 3 months. Im always very cautious with them but one time I let my gaurd down and this happened. He ran her over while coming inside from outside. I never let them outside together because he doesnt realize hes 90 lbs and the one time I didnt pay attention she got hurt. Other then that one time I have not had any other problems. I have a black lab and Peeka our yorkie but i don't let them together i'm sure my lab wouldn't hurt him but i'm not risking it my lab is an outside dog as well |
Im curious why would you let one of your pets live indoors but not let another? |

Thank you for all the replies! I definately have more piece of mind now knowing that many of you have larger dogs that get along great with your smaller ones. I DEFINATELY will never leave them alone together -- I crate my dogs while I'm away from home anyway so there's no chance of anything happening ;) |
I also have two big babies. I have a Olde English Bull Dogge (99 pounds) and a pitbull (70 pounds) I used to leave them alone with Babybear. They are such protecters that if they would never do a thing to harm Babybear. We used to go shopping and when we came back they would all be sleeping on the bed in our room. They are just a bunch of couch or bed potatoes.lol Now if Babybear was still walking he woudl be home with Bubba and Bud alone. |

1 Attachment(s) My last big dog was a Boxer, he was amazing with the little yorkies and all of the puppies. He would let them bite his lips and ears it was so cute. This is my late Garth. I lost Garth at age 12 just about two years ago. He was one of the best dogs I have ever had. I now have a Standard Poodle he is good with the little guys too, he is cleaner and does not shake drool everywhere , but does require extensive grooming. Attachment 84800 |
I have a 2 pound yorkie living with an extremely fat golden retriever. Buffy, the golden, is really old, though, so she doesn't move much or really notice Maizee, although Maizee is jumping on her constantly. My boyfriend has a Doby, which Maizee loathes and two of my friends have a Great Dane each. Maizee loves both of them. |
We dont' have a big dog that lives with us, but my parents and brother have 3 german wirehairs (hunting dogs) between them. When I go over there, everyone gets along great! Josie thinks she is big just like them, but they treat her like a baby and give her their toys. It's so cute! |
