Help!! Is My Pup Starving???? Ok I have a 13 week old yorkie (3 months 1 week) and my husband noticed that Bailey eats all of his 1/2 cup of his Science Diet Puppy Bites (what is recommended on the bag) through out the day but like after its gone he still goes and stiffs the lil bowl........Is my baby still hungry?? Are should I just go with the recommend dosage? |
first of all...Science diet isnt the best food to give. you should give natural choice or something like that. I feed Mason Exclusive and he loves it! :) and also.. you could free feed...I free feed Mason ever since he was little bitty and still do...he nibbles all day..hes not overweight and doesnt pig out either. |
Well my vet (one of the best in town-honestly) recommends Science Diet and says that it is a good food and also the breeder was also feeding my Bailey Science Diet but you are the first to say Science diet is not good? I'll check into it though ;) P.S. I couldn't bare to see him go to his bowl and sniff again of course I gave him some more food and he ate it up :D |
I'm going to suggest you go with a food without all the fillers... Chicken soup is what I feed! Its awesome, innova (spelling? solid gold?? never tries, natural ballance rolls are great, there are a lot of QUALITY brand you WONT find at the big stores... I'm sure a tone of people will pipe in here any minute and you'll have a TON of GOOD advice!!!! I say... Chicken soup for the puppy lovers soul.... mine won't eat anything else... |
Vets get paid to push Science Diet! |
Hi, I won't comment one way or the other on whether Science Diet is good or not. I know a lot of vets reccomend it so hopefully they're right. My reccomendation however is to leave a bowl full of dry out all day and let him pick. Believe me he'll only eat when he's hungry. I have four fur babies (Yorkies and one Morkie) my three are larger so I don't worry as much with them but my Morkie is under four pounds. I usually will give her a wet and dry mix in the morning and then leave dry out all day for all of them to pick on, then in the evening I give them all a mix of wet and dry for dinner then take the dishes up for the night. I also give them treats through the day (Small pieces of doggie bisquits) when they go out to potty etc. Hope this helps. Elaine |
Vets are not dog nutritionists. Iams/Science Diet spends tons of $$ with vets encouraging them to recommend their food. One of the best things a dog owner can do for their dog is to become a label reader and to research the foods they are feeding. I would feed a growing pup ALL he/she will eat. The pup is the judge of how many calories he/she needs on a particular day -- and it will vary according to activity and growth patterns. |
I think you'll hear alot of it by tomorrow morning!! alot of us are asleep... just wait! ;) One of my babies came home on Pedigree once... vet and breeder swore it was the best ever!!! heck they sponser MAJOR dog shows.... Still does not make it a quality food!!!! Big Money gets the Big Names out there! But I'm sure that glossy coated retreiver in the iams or Pedigree comercials is not really eating that crap... nor are the Ceasers dogs really eating Cesars... not the ones with teeth anyway! |
Thanks for the advice guys......who is Nature's Own made by I thought it was by Science Diet? Maybe I'm wrong |

Congratulations on your new puppy!:animal36 |
Here is a great website that rates dry dog foods by stars starting with the best at 6 stars. You can be the judge. I have tried several premium dry foods and my furbabies stick their nose up at it. You may go through a few brands before you find one that they like. Perhaps you have a pet store in your area that has sample size bags available for you take home and taste test before investing in a bag. My pet store will give a 100% return on a bag of food if not enjoyed by my gang. http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_f...ndex.php/cat/1 |
I feed my babies Royal Canine Puppy 33 and I know some of us don't like that food either - but my furbabies are happy on it and no allergies so far. If the day comes when I need to deal with allergies, I'll look at an all natural food for them. I switched years ago from Science Diet beause my poodle developed an allergy to it. But that can happen with any food. I think Royal Canine is good. |
I feed Chicken Soup puppy food to my small dogs and Chicken Soup adult to my golden retriever. This is the only food I will feed. They have nice pretty skin and hair. No more allergies for my maltese! It was so hard finding a food that didn't cause her to scratch and have rashy skin. And my golden retriever poops so much less! LOL That is a big deal! |
