How bad is chicken for a Yorkie?
 

I'm not talking about huge pieces of chicken, but rather little nibbles. And of course I'm talking COMPLETELY cooked, no breading or anything, just chicken. The thing is, Kelli is finally feeling better...she's not yelping as much and she seems to be feeling so, so much like her old self. She still has her moments, but not nearly as bad as last week. Anyway, she's just starting to come around again, be more trusting....except when it's just ME in the house for some reason, she has a tendency to not want to go outside for me. She looks at me as if I'm going to lure her into some deep, dark cave, lol. BUT, I found a trick...

Last night, I made chicken for dinner. Kelli LOVES it (as she had a taste last night while we were eating), I take a TINY piece of it and show her that I have it in my hand, she comes with me outside and I'm finally able to get her to go out that way....I know it seems mean probably, but it's better than her staying inside and pottying on herself (which she did yesterday because she just wouldn't go out for me :( I'm hoping this passes as she realizes the hurt is gone, because she wasn't like this before she got injured) - so I just wondered, am I doing something horribly wrong by giving her a tiny piece (and I do mean tiny, I shred it in my fingers and she gets just a few strands at a time) as insentive to go outside? She's not expecting it all the time, which is good, she only seems to expect it when I'm the one that lets her out, lol. She looks at me as if to say, "okay woman, where's the goody?" lol.

Opinions/advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

That's a great question and I'm glad to hear Kelli is feeling better! I try not to give my baby human food but it's so hard! I know he loves it.
I haven't heard anything bad about chicken besides chicken bones. I know not to let your doggys chew on chicken bones because they're smaller and can be hazardous to them. Other than that, I've never heard anything bad about chicken meat! I just try to stay away from the greasy chicken.

Other than that, thats a great way to reward her in my opinion. I <3 chicken. lol

My puppy got picky all of a sudden and didnt want to eat her kibble so our vet said that some shredded boiled chicken would be good to get her interested in eating again. He said the only thing to watch for is that it is all protein and can make them constipated (sorry for being graphic) and to just watch to make sure there is no straining when going #2. I think as long as your yorkie is getting enough fiber with the chicken you should be a-ok!

chicken is supposed to be perfectly okay for them as I was told and did feed both of mine baby food chicken until they weighed 2lbs and the boiled chicken is often suggested for picky eaters. Turkey is not suggested tho, I don't know why.

I heard the same thing abt the turkey. Specifically the dark meat. I don't remember why either though. Someone posted abt it around Thanksgiving.

I gave mine boiled chicken and hamburger for the first time a few weeks ago after reading about it on here.and while I was buying and fixing it (I fiixed a lot in advance and froze it) I bought and boiled some ground turkey too but they did not like the turkey. I mix the meat with plain white rice and they love the hamburger and chicken, but I tasted the turkey and compared to the hamburger and chicken it was YUCK!!! Threw it out!!!

It's safe to give them chicken...My yorkie wouldn't eat at all when he was 14 weeks old, and I boiled chicken and made him some rice to entice him to eat, and he loved it and the vet agreed that it was a good idea. I also fed him chicken baby food.

A lot of vets suggest chicken and rice when they are ill or not eating so I would think it is fine. It isn't mean at all to get her to go out that way. You're just using treats to train her. It's no different than giving her it when she sits on command.

We feed Yoda chicken a lot. Boiled chicken, with no skin, and cut up into tiny pieces for him. He's a big boy now, he loves his meat! :)

Thank you, everyone! Another thing we did was hide her pill in a little piece of chicken, lol. She gobbled it right up! And this is the same pill we tried putting in a green bean and a small piece of cheese before....she ate the bean and the cheese and spit the pill back out. She'll take her other medication, but there's just something about the way this pill tastes to her. It is kinda cute to watch her eat AROUND it and then spit it back out, lol.

We only eat white meat chicken, so I would never feed her dark, and not a ton either...I'm just really surprised how much this method to get her to go potty seems to be working. Like I said, it's only with me that she seems to have a real problem with going outside...if there's other people in the house she's hyper and all over. With just me, it's naptime, lol.
