Sentinel and Ticks The vet gave us a sample of Sentinel for Ben and I thought what a great idea -- no more Frontline. I even mentioned to the girl who gave me the folder with the pill, that I thought it was a great idea not to have to give both. BUT..... twice now, only Ben has come in from his backyard grazing with a tick!!! The first we saw right away but the second was attached and made a lump on his skin even though we got the head out. I just got done reading about Sentinel and it does not say it prevents ticks -- just fleas. None of my dogs have ever had fleas or ticks til now. I think I will just put him on Heartguard and Frontline like our older dogs. Sadie too when she gets her next vaccines. I am going to mention this at the vet -- they need to make sure to tell people that Sentinel is NOT a protection against ticks. :( |
Advantage is the same way it doesnt protect against ticks. We dont have ticks in our area though so I dont have to worry about it |
Sentinel doesn't protect against ticks. It only protects against heartworms and flea eggs. It doesn't even kill live fleas...only the eggs. So, if you want more flea/tick protection, you'll have to use Sentinel in conjunction with a topical like Frontline. |
We use Revolution, it protects against fleas, ticks, heartworm, and protects against and treats ear mites and sarcoptic mange. I like that's it's all in one, once a month. Less than 1% of animals have any reaction to it, and that tends to be stomach upset. It costs the same as other flea meds, but does SO much more. Ask your vet about it:thumbup: |

We use Frontline Plus and last fall Rocky had a tick on his head. I called the vet after I got it out, it was dead, and he said that the tick probably didn't die until it bit him. I, being the crazed yorkie mom that i am, took him to the vet to have Dr M look at the bite area. He said that the Flea and Tick applications don't stop them from getting on the dog, it kills them after they bite. I hope it was just a one time thing and those buggies don't get on my babies.Gross.:eek: |
Does anyone know of a safe pesticide that will kill ticks on the lawn? I am afraid things strong enough to kill ticks would also be bad for the dogs. They do a lot of "grazing" -- roaming the yard with their nose to the ground. I would not want to take the chance of making them sick. |
Mine use to be on Sentinel until I started seeing ticks. Now they take Advantage 9 months out of the year and Revolution the other 3 months(which are hot months and tick months). I also had my Orkin man treat my back yard by spraying the outside of our wood fence so nothing comes in the yard and no pesticide gets on the grass that way either. Of course our fence is not very big, it has helped a lot. |
