AKC vs CKC Hi is there a difference if you get a dog from a breeder who is a member of the CKC but not AKC? |
I assume you mean between AKC and CKC - Continental. I have had both over the years. I just prefer AKC since they can actually check up on breeders and they do. They check for records/paperwork to make sure they are right and up to date, they check the cleaniness of where the dogs are kept, and they may even ask for DNA to make sure the litter parents are who the breeder says they are. They also have many shows throughout the U.S. Several of my all-breed kennel club members have had visits from AKC and they usually just show up at the door and ask to check. There is even a list of breeders that are no longer allowed to deal with AKC because AKC found a problem. I like that they check. CKC is still too small to check. I have also heard of some breeders going to CKC becasue they do not check. And when I heard that you could find a dog on the streets (here on YT) and register it through CKC - you could do so and no nothing about whom the parents were or totally not know for sure if it really was a purebreed. That to me is a huge difference. When you ultimately get down to it - the dogs are only as good as the breeders ethics and knowledge as well as all the breeders before that breeder - And the Quality of the dogs. Did they breed to the standard? What was the quality of the dogs in the line all the way back? This is JMO, but I hope it helps. When I decided to get back into showing and breeding - I got all AKC yorkies and in my opinion will not get another CKC (Continental) again. But this is just me. I prefer a registery that checks up on their breeders. I think you will find though that it goes back to the quality of the dogs in the breeding - I have also seen AKC dogs that were not well represented of our standard. This is why it is important to research, know the lines, our standard, and the parents and grandparents of a dog/pup if possible. You will have a better idea of what you are getting. T. |
:goodpost: Topknot hit all the keypoints. I stick with AKC too. I know there are great dogs with other registries but I think way too many go to the other registries to avoid the requirements AKC has set for frequent breeders. |
:yeahthat: ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. I'll always stick w/ the AKC. The FCI dogs and JKC dogs I import also become registered w/ the AKC once they hit shore (as soon as possible anyway). They're registry can't be beat, and they have more steam in the dog world (ie. financial backing) that they are and most likely always will be at the forefront of the canine community on research and the like. |
