Change in behavior with other dogs
 
Today and yesterday Royce did something strange and unusual : a small dog approached him and royce startded growling and barking...samething happened today with another dog ...he never did it before ? I'm wondering why this sudden change ?:confused:

I think we need more information -

How old is your dog?

Did he used to like seeing other dogs?

Is he around other dogs very often?

Is he an only dog?

After he growls and barks at another dog - what does he do? What do you do?


Etc. etc. etc.

Royce is one year old, he is used to seeing other dogs when we go on our daily walks, he is my only dogs and when he did that at first i ws surprised then i said Royce "nice" that didnt stop till the other dog was far:confused:

Seems maybe he needs more socialization? Not only meeting other dogs while walking but also having him play with different dogs.

I know exactlly what your talking about. It happend to me when Buddy was
around one it seemed to start and has not stopped. He actually pulled so hard the first time the leash opened and he went after and got a Huskie!
I was so shocked I screamed. Out of the blue he deceided not like large strange dogs he is not familiar with. We have been working on this for 1 1/2 yrs. It has gotten better but at times he gets spastic! It's really scary.
I wish I could help you more. I even ordered and received Ceaser Milan DVD'S for help. It is important to distract them and gain their attention when you see another dog coming. Try treats also. Good luck

I think dogs get feelings about other dogs, just as they do with some people. Rocky, for example, usually loves other dogs, but occasionally he will growl at one. At petsmart the other day there were 2 German Shepards (I think that's what they were, they could've been mixed) walking around, but they weren't together. One Rocky was crying to go play with him, but the other one Rocky walked by and gave him the nastiest growl.

I agree. I also think that feeling cornered has alot to do with it. If the leash is tight and they know they can't escape, they may act more aggressive than usual.

If it happens regularly, consult your trainer.

Being on a leash has a lot to do with it, at least that's what I believe. My Gizmo is very aggressive (I posted about him before, don't know if you know or not) but he HATES people. When my mom has to introduce him to someone (only people who go to my parents house often) if he is on the leash and being restrained he'll get angry. It's kinda a tough call though, because it's like do we keep him on the leash incase he tries to attack, but the aleash makes him more aggressive. So usually I think she keeps him on the leash, but gives him some slack with it so he's not being held back.

Yes, I think it's important in their doggy minds that they be able to escape, or at least back away. Without that, they can't indicate "hey, I'm not looking for a fight". Poor them, they don't realize that us ignorant humans can't always understand that language.

In your mom's case, if she really can't trust that he won't attack strangers, I'd probably encourage her to baby-gate him away until he calms down. If she feels that she must leash him, I'd encourage her to try to body-block between pup and people so that pup feels like she is running interference for him.
