Car Sick Yorkie Toto will be two years old in March and is still unable to ride in the car. He always gets sick and vomits numerous times. I have had to stop as many as 4 times to clean his crate and put in more papers and pads. The vet told me to give him 1/4 of a dramamine, still he got sick. I have used childrens benadryl and have also tried the pet calming pills. Nothing has worked. I also withhold his food for several hours before traveling. When I even start toward my car, he starts to stiffen up and begins to shake and it's almost impossible to get him in his crate. The only time that I travel with him now is to go the the vet. I have tried taking him on little 5 minute rides, no luck! Toto is sort of a timid yorkie. Loud noises, sudden movements or anything out of the ordinary seem to scare him to death. He also does not like to be picked up. I have worked and worked with him but nothing seems to help. He has never been mistreated in any way. Has anyone else had any of these problems? |
My Jo-Jo gets nervous and shakey when you even mention going for a ride...the poor little guy! He is 2 now also and the only thing that works for him is Mechlazine (sp?) that I get from the vet...we tried a couple other things and nothing really worked for him. I give it to him in a little bit of soft food about a half hour before we go anywhere and he's fine...he made it all the way from Florida without getting sick once. I always hoped he would grow out of it but I don't think he's going to. Ask your vet to give you some to try but make sure they divide the pills for you so you know the dosage is right. Good luck...I hope it works for your little Toto. |
Almost all my yorkies had to get use to car rides. When they were pups I would go home get the pup and then go to the gas station. When I would get home I would get the pup and then go around the block. Repeating everyday for a few months. Eventually building up to longer trips. Even now, Molly is 2 1/2 and if I do not bring her in the car for more than a week she will be shaky again. Now I have Molly's pups at 4 months and am starting them on the gas station trip. If I go any farther one on them will vomit. It is a slow process and some are better than others. They sure are all different. Good luck. |
Kodak never threw up, thank goodness, but I hear it goes away eventually. He rides all the time and is ready to go when he hears the keys. I bet my next one won't be so easy going.:) |
