stringy coat wondering if yorkies can just have a bad coat... i was looking thru some old threads here on yorkie hair and my baby's hair is so stringy looking... she looks great after seeing the groomer, but after a few days of wrestling with the cat, she's bad to her raggedy look... i think she's fine, but visitors say she looks scraggly :( am i just not brushing enough (she hates the brush) or is there a leave -in conditioner for dogs? are there diff types of hair for yorkies? I always thought she had a silky coat but i'm not so sure after seeing some other babies on here |
I do think a lot of puppies go through a stage where they don't look their best.... just a stage! And - for sure - some of the pups with the thinnest hair grow the thickest coats when they get older. Unfortunately, I think you're going to just have to wait and see what you get - and I would guess that it will be just fine... Carol Jean |
Don't fret too much, sometimes the coat that you're describing turn out to be the nicest. When I 1st brought my Savannah home, she looked like she had mange....we called her the cat that barked......I showed her to my mentor.....her words were she's going to have a lovely, correct coat and she did. One thing you can do is over brush, never brush a dry or dirty coat. Conditioners can make a coat heavy and flat. Do you use a clarifying shampoo on occassion? |
well, she's 2, so i think she's about done growing out her coat. i guess some yorkies are better with a puppy cut? |
I know most dogs go through coat changes, so it could just be a phase. Maizee's hair was stringy before she lost it all. I'm sure your yorkie won't lose her hair, but I think different yorkies do have different hair types. I would prefer a puppy cut, but only because it would be so hard to keep her hair managed. But I'm lazy :D |
I got my second pup from a show breeder who let her go because her coat was coarse. It is indeed coarse and totally unlike my other girl who has a cottony coat. We call her our "bad hair girl", but it was her ticket to drop out of showing and live the lazy, lazy, lazy, good life with us!!! In addition to having bad hair she has now forgotten how to walk perfectly on a leash, and I fear she enjoys her doggie cookies much too much!!! |
If she's still a puppy then I'm sure it's fine. They're the ones that can later turn into swans. I like to use the Coat Handler leave in conditioner when bathing. Good luck. |

Sadie just turned 3 yrs old and she has ALWAYS had a stringy looking coat...I am thinking about maybe giving her a puppy cut next summer and see if that helps...Her coat is coarse feeling but, straight...not wirey looking...if you find something that works please post it! Thanks |
I noticed a big improvement after starting Jaxon on Missing Link. I only give him a teeny tiny bit sprinkled on his crunchies but it really seems to have helped his hair. |
