What exactly is Micochipped? Can somegive me the full details on it what it acutally does what are the benefits, how much it cost ect? Thanks!! |
The benefits are IMMEASURABLE! I've recovered two Akitas due to microchipping alone. There are a few companies out there like: AVID and Home Again that you can choose from. And it's just what it sounds like. There is a little microchip (about the size of a small grain of rice) that is implanted commonly in between the shoulder blades. And when scanned, this little chip emits a "prison number"-for lack of a better word ;)- that you call in to the company that created the chip. That company will then tell the person that scanned it all of the neccessary information to get the dog back home safely and notify them of any medical conditions they have on file. The registry fee is cheap and it's a one time deal. No monthly bs fees and what not. You just have to be sure to submit your current info. if your vet doesn't do it for you. And every time you move or your dog develops a medical condition you should call the chip company and update their records. Hope this helps. |
Another thing to mention- You shouldn't feel the chip, unless it's been recently implanted in a small puppy then you might for a short period of time. But as they grow and gain fat and mass the chip will shift slightly (w/o injury or concern to the dog) and you'll no longer be able to feel it and it can still be easily scanned. If you have a large breed dog, then I'd wait to chip them until they're closer to 10 months. Because by then most of their rapid development is done and you don't have to worry about the chip shifting drastically. If it's a tiny Yorkie puppy and one that is anticipated to remain tiny, some breeders-especially overseas-will actually chip right under the skin of the next because the shoulder blades are simply too close together. But your average 4-7 pound Yorkie is chipped between the shoulder blades usually at your the same visit as your last set of inoculations. |
So basically if someone found my yorkie how would they know there is a chip inside and who would scan the chip? Would they have to go to the vet for that? |
No one would really know since there isn't an outward indication that the dog is chipped. I mean, they give you a tag to put on your dogs collar, but that's assuming two things: 1.) your dog will be wearing said collar w/ said tag and 2.) that the person viewing that info. is honest and takes your dog in to be scanned. NOW, if your dog does get loose, let's say, and it's picked up by a local police; animal control; an honest citizen; or is a new patient at a vets office, the routinely now scan for microchips. So, I'd ask your vet what there policy is. Ask him/her if they get a new patient in, even if it's a puppy, will they scan it for a chip to confirm the identity of the owner? If it's an older new patient and the info. doesn't match up, it's possible that the old owners just never transferred the data over, but the vet should still attempt to contact the owners on file to confirm first that that's in fact what's happened. |
