Puppy growth etch questions Hello YT people! I have to say this site is a godsend for sure:love: IF THIS IS IN THE WRONG AREA PLEASE TRANSFER FOR ME ADMN :). I wasn't sure just where to put these questions at....I have done a few searches and Iv'e not been very lucky. SO if this is a duplicate post please direct me to the best spot ;) Yes I am currently reading up on pup rearing and checking other sites etc As well as having an upcoming vet apointment for the whole family...I'm just curious of first hand experience from other YT members. [I]For how long do you keep your Human family from handling or messing with new pups? Or do you at all?[/I]...Why I really ask is my children (10,11,15) are always asking to hold a pup I keep telling them no ...not yet. I barely even let them go into the same room and look at the pups from a distance :rolleyes: Which makes them mad but I am just trying to keep my gal has comfortable as possible.' When did you start feeding the pups and what did you feed them? Why I ask is I was wondering if you go by a certain age no matter the size or weight of a pup for this. Heating pad...How long did you use it for the pups? Mom is refusing to eat any type of dog food that I have tried ..I fear I am spoiling her by feeding her human food, but I am terrified she won't have enough strength if I don't.... Have any of you had this issue with your gal after having pups? |

I just want to let you know that while I do not breed, I worked as a consult and advisor for many breeders and served as a whelping nurse since I was about 13 w/ a veterinarian as my mentor. I'm 25 now and all I do is train and show dogs. As far as your first question here goes, I'd say that they can handle them the first day to be honest. HOWEVER, you want to keep exposure to a minimum and when picking them up go slowly and cradle them properly w/ washed hands. And it's best to have them sitting on the floor so the puppy isn't raised too high off the ground. The biggest concern is that they just went through a lot just to be born. LET THEM REST. Handling them is going to be a neccessity, but I prefer the idea that only one person-two at most, preferably adults handle them until they're closer to a week of age. When did you start feeding the pups and what did you feed them? I've noticed that this varies considerably by a week or two and by breed. Many that I speak w/ begin feeding moistened kibble or a rice cereal mix at about 5 weeks of age. Heating pad... YES. I prefer heating pads myself on a medium setting, but again this varies per breed also. The only real danger of a heating pad is the threat of it becoming faulty and overheating OR dying on you. I always recommend that they have a heat lamp handy just in case. Mom is refusing to eat any type of dog food You need to give her what she'll eat in order to give her the nutrients needed to continue rearing those puppies. Don't worry about what she will and won't eat after this litter to be honest. At that time there are plenty of tactics to put her back on kibble, and you only have to worry about her loosing some weight while transitioning her back, rather than affecting the puppies too. |

Hello Everyone....Just wanted to ask a few questions for Pet owners/breeders that have been through a situation like this or know first hand someone who has.... Not looking for a debate...Just seeing what different situations have called for. What is the average age your pup/ a pup/litter.... left it's mom? > Is it 8 weeks plus? >Do you know of a situation where it Can it be harmful if done between 6 and 8 weeks >Is this changed if the mom shows agression to the pup? >Does the age differ if the pups have been orphaned? (sp?) sorry lol What age did your pup start it's first set of shots? >6weeks >7weeks >8weeks |

I handle my pups as soon as they are born, Children do carry a bunch of germs from friends at school , but after they were a few weeks old as long as they washed there hands and were not sick them selves I think it is okay. I start feeding mine at 4 weeks with ground up dry puppy food and puppy formula. In winter I use the heating pad all the time on medium, in one corner of the whelping box. As far as vaccines, my new vet won't do them until 8 weeks, which is just fine with me..:) I think it depends on the size and state of the puppy, as to when they should leave the nest. |
Thanks...As for the shots I always thought 8 weeks but this current vet is saying between 6 and 8 weeks so I just figured I would see what others have done. |
