New and First Yorkie I was just given my first Yorkie. I do not know anything about this breed. She is 8 weeks old....I don't know what to feed her or how much to give her. She is very tiny but I do not think she is a miniature??? |
Hi and welcome to YT. You can do a search here on YT - in the blue tool bar above - for all kinds of helpful information. How much does she weigh? Do you have NutriCal? It is a good supplement. We use Nutro Natural Choice for foods, but our little guy has a sensitive stomache, so maybe someone else can help w/ foods. |
Welcome...........I feed my 3 month old Science Diet Puppy Bites and I give put a 1/2 cup in his bowl and that last him almost 2 days but by like the middle of the second day I fill it up again and fresh water through out the day |
Do you know what the breeder was feeding her? If you do it is best to continue feeding that untill the puppy is acclimated then you can gradually switch over to another brand if you want. If you dont know what the breeder fed just pick a good quality food for her. It seems like Nutro and Chicken Soup are the easiest better brands to find |
Did they tell you to watch for hyhpoglycemia. I put Karo syrup in the water for my guys for the first two weeks. It is extremely important that you make sure they are eating, and if they aren't, then give them chicken or scrambled eggs or cottage cheese, anything that you can get them to eat. Also expect him to sleep most of the time. They are more like infants at 8 weeks, they eat and poop and sleep. Not a whole lot of playing. So for the next two weeks, keep him warm and fed and let him sleep. Most breeders do not let them go to new homes until 10 to 12 weeks. |
We also use Science Diet puppy bites When they are that little our vet said to feed 3 times a day until 5 months old. Then 2x a day WELCOME TO YT |
Welcome to YT. Congrats on your new baby. Come back and tell us about him/her, what you named the puppy and maybe some pictures. good luck. |
New and First Yorkie She is a little girl....I haven't picked a name yet....I just got her about 36 hours ago....I am waiting to see what kind of personality she has.....right now I think I should call her "biter", Pee Pot or Ms Poops Alot.....my other dog hasn't decided if she likes her or not....rescue dog....s**tz tzu mix..very sweet dog but doesn't like the puppy biting all the time....I am going to have to get a book on Yorkies. I don't know anything about them....I don't know how to post a picture....she is 8 weeks old and thinks she is a great dane....very tough and undaunted by my other dog's attempts to not play with her....persistent little thing. She is eating fine and she is being kept very snuggly warm. I haven't had to house break in a while....years in fact...and getting up at 6:30 in the morning to go outside....well, at least I live in FL so it isn't so cold....she pees on paper, floors, patios...grass....she just likes to pee....since she is so low to the ground it is hard to see that she is squatting until the little puddle appears under her....I didn't get her from a breeder.....she was an accidently bred dog....owner didn't know her dog was old enough to get pregnant and wasn't planning on breeding her Yorkies.....she said she is going to have them fixed so it doesn't happen again. The "breeder" was feeding her Ceasars only because she didn't know what to feed her....I have seen that most people on this site do not like this brand of food....and of course that is what I have bought...yes, another trip to the store....I have only given her a small amount at a time because she is so tiny...I am guessing she only weighs about a pound if even that much so I have just given her a teaspoon or two at a time and then I take her right outside....we will do this three times a day....but I will switch over to dry food for the other two times...I am not a fan of wet food. Any advice is appreciated.....So far all my name choices have been shot down by hubby or kids so I will continue to look |
Hi and congrats on your new puppy! Here are my suggestions: 1. Take her to the vet right away. She needs to start getting her puppy vaccinations. It is a series of 4. That way you can get her weighed and see if she has any health problems. 2. As far as food, you can try Nutro Ultra for Puppies. My breeder fed Izzy this and I am still feeding it to him. It is a really good brand, all natural and good for their skin and coat. They have it at Petsmart and Petco. Here is the Nutro website http://www.ultraholistic.com/puppy.shtml 3. Book suggestion: I bought Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies. It is a great book with all sorts of information, from buying your puppy, bringing them home, potty training, grooming and there is good info on the breed itself. Its a great book to have as a reference too. Here is a link on Amazon, but you can find it at any bookstore; Borders, Barnes and Nobles. http://www.amazon.com/Yorkshire-Terr.../dp/0764568809 Oh and one more suggestion, I like Gracie or Roxy for a girl! :D I hope this information helps. Good luck and let us know how she is doing!:) |
First & New Yorkie She has had her first set of shots....I am waiting to get the shot records and her "papers" from the seller...I should have by this weekend....she seems to be quite healthy but I will be taking her to the vet because I am afraid to clip her little nails....they are black and I can't see where to cut them and I don't want to hurt her.....they keep snagging on the carpet...our clothes...thanks for the book suggestion....roxie is cute...kind of a scrappy little name....I will have to put it to the voters....I also like Holly but no one else seemed to jump on that one so I am still looking...of course I also liked Alexis and Jackie which I was told was too "Old School". How do I add her picture? |
To add a picture(s), underneath where you type your message you will see icons and below that you will see where it says Additional Options, in that box you will see where it says Manage Attachments, click on that and then you will have a box pop up, click on browse, and find where the pic is in your computer then after you add 1 or 4 at a time click on upload. Give it a sec for them to upload depending on how many you have and then close the window. Then wether you type anything or just put the pic(s) on here, click submit reply. May sound complicated but very easy once you get the hang of it. And sorry if it sounds confusing, someone may tell you an easier way! And by the way Welcome to YT!:welcome4: |
congrats on your new baby |
I tried to upload a picture but it said it was too large of a file and I don't know how to make it smaller.... |

To post pics, when you are typing in a message there is a paperclip in the toolbar at the top, its near the fonts, sizes, and the smiley face. Click on that and a box will pop up to prompt you to add the files. Click on browse to upload the photos. Hope this helps!:) |
Hi welcome and congratulations. IF I were you I'd give her a vet visit asap ...papers or not so your vet can give her a clean bill of health - I would advise get a book on yorkies NOW and read here as much as you can - there is a search bar on the site and you can type key words to learn things as what to feed a tiny puppy etc. At only 1 lb - you have a big responsibility on your hands - it's not like a bigger dog that can fend for themselves at 6-8 weeks - Yorkies can be prone to things a larger dog isn't....like Hypoglycemia & you really need to know how to care for such a small dog - don't mean to sound so direct but they can be alot of work at that age and you need to know what to expect - little things like watching where you walk will come naturally :p |
