New Yorkie mom Hi, I just adopted an older Yorkie. I am so excited about having him. He is still at the hospital. He was an abused yorkie and was rescued by the police. He has had all his teeth removed and I think may only have two left. His skin is in bad condition but his personality is amazing. You would never know he was in pain even with a broken jaw and surgery. I guess I would like some advice on what to feed him, and what I can use on his skin till the hair comes back in. They estimate his age at eight or older but the spirit of a puppy. Wish me luck and any advice on house training an older dog may be needed as I dont know if he is house trained . He weighs just under four pounds. Thanks and hope to be here for a long time with stories on Whiskey. |
God bless you for rescuing him! I'm sure he will enjoy his life of leasure at your house! Welcome to YT...I'm Tiffany and have 2 yorkies, Pippa 2 1/2 years old and Scout 18 months old. |
Hello and welcome. you are an angel for rescuing him. Did his former owner break his jaw? I just dont understand how someone can do that to an innocent living thing |
Just realized I didn't say a thing about any of your questions!! Hopefully the vet can tell you what he should eat and what to do about his fur. I have a feeling once he's in a loving home with a good diet, those things will take care of themselves. As far as potty training, it depends on what he's used to...is he outside trained or potty pad trained? It takes lots of patience and time, but even older dogs can be potty trained. There are lots of threads on YT about potty training. Just type it in a search in the blue bar above this to your right and you'll find lots of stuff! Good luck! |
well aren't you a saint! there need to be more people like you around.. what a lucky little guy.. he is just going to soak up all the love! i would imagine you have to feed him a wet food.. but you can get high quality wet foods and you might think about using a suppliemnt like Missing Link. Can't wait to see a picture of the little guy! |
Thanks for the welcome His jaw was broken by the previous owner according to what they tell me and kicked etc. I dont know how anyone could do this its so very sad. But they tell me it has not quelled his spirit and he loves people and other animals too. Many may think Im nuts but I have not even seen him yet he is still in the hospital. I was told his story when I went looking to adopt and well I loved him sight unseen a dog that forgiving deserves to be loved and spoiled for the rest of his days. Does anyone here buy from Petedge? I like the products but wonder if they may be overpriced? Im in Fort LAuderdale Florida so if anyone knows where I can buy shapoos wholesale it would be great...I am also volonteering at our local shelter as a groomer...I can take Whiskey with me so it works out...he wont ever be alone! Thanks again for the welcome as soon as I have pics I will post them |
Petedge's prices are good, but they charge an arm and a leg for shipping. As far as shampoo, I believe the best dog products out there are Chris Christensen (ccsystems.com I think). I am such a big fan of these products, I won't use anything else. I use the Day to Day Shampoo and conditioner and the Ice on Ice. They have a little trial size of their products that is nice to get just to try and see if you like it. |
Chris Christensen website is : chrissystems.com I also love the brushes. My dogs absolutely love to be brushed with these brushes. I have the 20 mm Little Wonder Brush. |
Hi and welcome to YT! You are an angel for taking him in! That is so wonderful of you! I like PetEdge and I tend to buy enough at one time, that the shipping is never bad at all! In fact, I just bought 2 gallons of shampoo, 2 bags of treats, several toys, two bags of Missing Link, etc. and the shipping was only $24!!! That is not bad at all.....especially for the weight of my package. Definitely get Missing Link and/or NutriCal (PetEdge has them both - and I found both to be cheaper there than anywhere else). We use PetSilk shampoo/conditioner and like it alot! We got it from PetEdge also. We got a natural boar bristle brush from Sally's Beauty Supply that works great - the natural boar bristle in PetEdge is pretty high priced, someone recommended Sally's and that is where we got ours. It may take him awhile to adjust to everything....new home, no teeth, etc. So please give him time and patience! There is no telling what he was taught or learned on his own, so it will be something new for the both of you. We feed Nutro Natural Choice for Sensitive Stomaches and of course, all of their treats, but w/ him not having many teeth, I would ask the vet what they recommend......I have no clue on any of the soft foods! That poor baby! I hope he is doing well and will adjust to your home well! Can't wait to hear an update on him and see pictures! |
What a wonderful thing to do for this poor little one. I have read that they can eat canned dog food even without teeth. I would go with something like Natural Balance, Wellness, any of the premium brands; maybe a little plain yogurt. The skin problem might go away with the right food, but make sure he is checked for any of the little mange critters that cause horrible skin problems. Hypothyroidism can cause bad skin problems too. It is so hard to think of people being so cruel -- what is wong with them?? Thankfully people like you restore faith in human nature. |
