if you have a Yorkie & baby/kids PLEASE PLEASE need your help My yorkie is 15 months old and I am now due any day for my 1st child. I am getting really nervous about how she is going to react with a newborn baby in the house. She is so so attached to me i work from home and am with her most the time aside from doing errands, and she always has to be with me in the house no matter what i am doing. So if any of you can help please do. I still want to love my yorkie the same after I have a baby. Thank you |
Make sure your yorkie is given lots of extra love and attention and does not feel left out. When possible give the Yorkie attention before the baby. The baby will not know that he/she was given attention 2nd but your yorkie will. I would still hold and cuddle your yorkie the same as always. Even if you have to hold both of them at the same time, while relaxing on the couch or bed. If your yorkie is secure in the fact that she will always be your little furbaby and knows she is not being replaced, she will come to love the baby and most likely will be very protective of the baby. |
I didnt have a yorkie with a baby but i do have a 5 year old and a yorkie. I am sure your yorkie will do fine with the new baby. Just give your yorkie lots of attention. I think they are a very vesatile dog that can adjust to changes |
I had my Yorkie Zorro for 5 years when I had my dtr. First I had never left him overnight so when I first came home from the hospital he was mad at me for leaving him. He wouldn't come by me for about an hour. I had my Mom carry my dtr in the house and put her in her crib and I went in my bedroom and Zorro came in after a little while and was his normal self. Then the baby started crying and that freaked him out. Then I was feeding her on the couch and she had to wear this little knit hat becasue she was premature, Zorro who was the sweetest dog ever, ran up and snatched it off her head. He of course didn't hurt her. I just let him slowly get use to her and he started laying right by her when her carrier was on the floor. But I always supervised them together. I just showed him a lot of attention and he was fine. As he got use to her, I would feed her sitting in a rocking chair and cradle her on my lap and Zorro would be right there with her. I don't think you will have any problems. |
Your yorkie kid should do fine...Just never leave her alone with the baby...esspecially til you knjow how se is going to act. I have a very attached female that acted sort of cold when i brought home Jayce last year...now, she flips everytime she sees him...they are definite buds!! He'll be a year old on Wednesday. Good luck and congrats on your new little one. Christmas babies are soo much fun! Kristie |
My yorkies love my grandbabies. They are always right in their face. You have to allow your yorkie to smell and be around the baby. And then the will probably want to adopt the baby. |
Take a special blanket to the hospital with you, wrap the baby in it for a while and have someone bring it home to your furbaby to smell and cuddle up on. At least the pup will have the baby's scent to explore before the real thing comes home. The rest of the advice in this thread sounds great. Don't be too nervous as the baby and the dog will pick up on it. Relax. Best of luck in your delivery and homecoming! |
One other thing that wasn't mentioned was when I was pregnant with my first we started pulling on my doggies ears and fur if he/she is used it now when a little starts to grab and pull on ears or fur it won't be a big deal. Def. wrap you baby in blanket and have your husband bring it home for your puppy to smell so he/she alreadys knows the scent. It will be a easy transition our dog was so exicted as he knew something was going on because he kept getting kicked! lol Bucky loved my son from the get go, couldn't wait to lick him and was so excited about it. good luck you and your family!! |
thank you all so much for the great advice, i hope my lil girl does as good as yours did with our new addition. thanks again |
