Why do they lift their legs? Does anyone know how to stop the male dogs from lifting one leg when they pee? Teddy just started doing this but he only does it sometimes. Can they be trained to only squat and not lift any legs? Just wondering....thanks! |
The only way I know for males to not do that is if you have them nuetered very young. Like around 4-5 months old. I've never heard of being able to make them not lift their leg by any other method...Jaden was nuetered later and he'll lift his leg if we're inside and he's going ona pee-pad but if we're outside he'll squat  |
im not sure if your talking about marking if thats what your talking about then neutering young is your only chance If your talking about just lifting there leg in general (outside) then i think its impossible all male dogs lift |

Really? I've heard of some that don't. Hmm I don't think it's marking cuz Teddy is only 5 months old. Unless they do it that young. But he doesn't do it all the time. It's just once in a while. |
I think it is just natural for a male to lift his leg. If yours only does it outside your ahead of the game |
I don't think there is any rhyme or reason. I had a male Cocker Spaniel who never lifted his leg. Jeter never lifted his leg before he was neutered and now, at 1 1/2 years old, he lifts about 80% of the time. Who knows what makes him lift sometimes, and not lift others. |
Toto was nuetered at 6 months. Sometimes he squats and sometimes he lifts his leg. The funny part is, he will like go up to a post or tree on the right side and lift the opposite leg. I just crack up when he does that. Only it wasn't to funny last night at 11:30 p.m. and the temperature was 7 degrees!  He hasn't got the leg lifting down pat yet. |

Loki squats. Although he does have a way of peeing in the wet grass with 2 feet on the sidewalk and 1 paw lifted so only 1 paw gets wet... but he never lifted his leg. He was neutered at about 6 months and I *never* let him even sniff anything upright. No trees, posts, mailboxes, etc. So he never learned to lift. |
I have 2 females that lift their legs to pee!!!! They squat until they are almost done and then lift their left leg to finish the job. Jazzy started to do this after watching her friend--a 90 lb male golden lab who lived next door. Mickey just followed Jazzy's example; per usual. Not to be gross, but I am happy they pee like this. Their fur, in that area, stays much cleaner and odor free. If you know what I mean. ;) |
My boy hasn't lifted yet... He's getting neutered soon and I'm wondering how to keep him pad trained when he starts lifting  ... |
I have never seen Rocco lift his leg ,he always squats. Quote:

If it's marking you're worried about, get him netured or use a bellyband with a pad. My Yorkie boy still lifts his leg even while wearing the bellyband. My female Chihuahua squats, but holds one paw slightly off the ground?? Go figure! |
A breeder told me that if I was not going to breed Ben, I should neuter him before he started lifting his leg -- I said too late, he was already doing that when I got him at 10 weeks. I think it is just natural. You can't ask your human man to sit when he pees (although I wish you could -- the aim would be much better) and you can't really ask your male Yorkie to not lift a leg if he has the inclination. :) |
So basically if you get them neutured early it helps with that? I see...or it's just some dogs do it and some don't. |
