Unaffectionate Yorkie I have a weird question, does anyone else have a Yorkie who is unaffectionate towards them? I am first time Yorkie owner. I have had my furbaby for a year now. I love him to death but he doesn't want to stay in my lap. Everytime I want to cuddle with him I pick him up and he just jumps off. Are Yorkies known to be unaffectionate? However, if my friend comes over he will lay down next to him and even fall asleep in his lap? Why is this? My dog is a male and my friend is too so is it just that he likes men? I just thought I would post this and see if anyone has any comments. |
Maybe your friend hides treats in his pocket;) jk sorry I don't know..my Lillian refuses to sit on my lap for longer than 2 minutes..if I pick her back up she cries to get down. |
Chachi is like that toward me too. Rarely will he sit in my lap but he will sit in my Husbands lap |
Sorry I don't know what to tell you mine are really loving. I do notice though that if you are like me and can't sit still they would rather sit on the lap of some one who does. I don't sit and watch TV or stay in one pace long but when I do they will come up and lay with me. |
I practically have to tie Maizee down to sit on my lap. She definitely prefers to sit on male laps for some reason. She will go to my boyfriend, father, and other male friends before she comes to me. But if I get up to go somewhere, she bounces off their lap and follows me where I go, so it evens out. |
My Rylee is very independent. She'll sit close to to me, but not "on" me like my Buster. She's always guarding the house too. She sits for a while, then she is off investigating noises and stuff. She's a busy body. This is why I got a doggy door, that way she can let herself out whenever she wants. |
I wouldn't worry. Maybe it has to be on his terms. If I put Buddy on my lap most of the time he will jump down. If I am watching TV up he comes turns in his usuall circle, like a cat, and gets all cuddled up for the night. Carol & Buddy:aimeeyork |
lexi is the same way, dont worry, she doesnt want to be held or cuddle unless its at night under the covers is shes cold |
Out of my 4, I have one that doesn't like to be held. The other 3 will jump in my lap the minute I sit down but the one yorkie never sits in my lap. He is a busybody also and always has to be playing with something. |
Sometimes I wish that was my problem. With 3 laps to sit on in this house, all 3 furbabies have to all sit on my lap....all the time!!!! Soon as I walk into the family room, they start circling me, wondering where I'm going to sit....LOL Little boogers!:) |
Don't worry! some yorkies are just like that. Some are not "lap dogs" not all small dogs are. Some like to play, play, investigate, run, they won't stay still. That doesn't mean they aren't affectionate, because once they are done with all the playing, they sit by you and cuddle. My Bengi is just like that and I love him! |
Well, this is interesting. When in the research phase, I'd read that males are the more affectionate of the breed, and that little girls are just independent. And, actually, the only reason I opted for a girl was so I could 'froofie' her up! lol As it turns out, Abigail is very much a lap dog. Actually, she's a lap dog, chest dog, shoulder dog...anywhere she can get on us! She'd surely be on my head if she could! |
Rudy is like that, it is on his terms. He will sit by me in the recliner but, if i try to put him on my lap he jumps down. Polly and Sprout are lap yorkies, Maddie on her terms she will sit on my lap, but she sleeps on the bed right by me. They all have such different personalities. |
i call it "independant!" layla likes to lay on her own.. if it is late at night and she is really tired. i can pick her up and she'll stay.. but that's rare! |
Mazie is our cuddle bug, and Kiki has always been more independent. She likes to be NEAR us, but not in our laps. And if she's laying by us and we start petting her, she'll usually hop away. That seems weird to me, but I guess it's just a personality thing. |
Toby always has to lay on your lap when he sleeps or touch you in some way. He's a cuddle bug for sure. To hold him, well, not so much. Guess he makes the terms.:D |
Brownie is not a lap dog at all |
Thanks for all the replies. I am glad I don't have the only "independant" yorkie. He does stay with me sometimes when he falls asleep. I guess he is just too nosy to sit still during the day. |
Toto is the same way. He will jump up in my chair if he wants a treat. I can try to pick him up and he will just stiffen up and act like he is afraid. Sometimes he will stand up and act like he wants you to pick him up, but then he backs away. I also can not get him to roll over on his back, that scares him to death too. He does love to sleep with me and is really good about not getting up at night. I have had him over a year now. |
Yorkies are funny sometimes... Pepper would want to follow me everywhere but he sits only on my hubby's lap (once in a blue moon but still...). The only time I get is when brushing him, but usually he's too wiggly and ends up on the chair. He never comes up and wants to be put on the lap, he'd rather sleep in his own bed in the kitchen than on one of the beds/pilows/blankets in the bedroom. Little independent guy ;) |
I am so glad I read this post. I was kind of wondering this about Shylah. Starsky is sooo cuddley, always on my lap, and I can hold him any way I want to. But Shylah runs from us and only will cuddle on her terms. She will only sit on my husband's lap or next to me, or in her bed. She rarely lets me hold her for a long lenght of time unless she is out of it. She is so timid and yet Starsky is so social. They not only look so different, they all act different too. Glad to hear she is not abnormal! |
