New Yorkie Problems? Hi, I'm new to this site and to owning a Yorkie. I will not deny that I totally got conned! This woman was advertising 'Teacup' Yorkies and being a young student, I didn't know any better. Lucky for me, before I went to the breeder I did my research and immediately called to be told that the puppies would probably grow to be 5 pounds. Well... I went there to pick out my puppy and discovered the most horrible thing I had ever seen in my life. Sweet puppies who were being sold at "breeder" prices that were obviously puppy mill Yorkie-types. At three months they had already been shipped across the country and this woman was trying to pass them off as well bred Yorkies. My mother, who bought me the puppy as a graduation present, kind of stared and said "I think we're being ripped off." This fact really didn't matter to me as it became apparent that this woman just left these pups alone in a giant room filled with paper, gave them food and water and never socialized them. I fell in love with my Mr. Monster and had to rescue him from Ms. Cruela Deville. He is the sweetest little love in the world and I would never want anything else in a 4 month old puppy (and at 2.5 pounds now, I imagine he will grow to be a healthy weight). My questions are this: because of his treatment as a puppy he has terrible separation anxiety whenever I leave the house, he spent most of his youth with his litter and so he's comfortable around other dogs but aside from me and my boyfriend he cannot be left alone with or without other humans (we tried to go out to dinner and left him at my mom's and he worked himself into an anxiety attack) is there something I can do to make learning to function without us easier, or does it have to be a situation of tough love? I would never leave him for long, but a matter of a few hours really upsets him. My second question is: Do any of you know of any legal recourse I can take against this woman? Even if the way she treated them cannot be classified as abuse, is there any kind of misrepresentation laws? She said that they could be UKC registered, and then when I looked it up, he couldn't even be registered with them, if that makes any difference. Thanks! I must say that I am very proud to become part of the Yorkie-owning community! |
Welcome to YT. I can't answer your questions, just wanted to welcome you. I hope you can get some help for his anxiety. someone else has probably had similar experiences. |
sorry..my chihuahua isn't very socialized either..we just keep him away from strangers..I don't know what to do i'm scared he will bite someone.. Welcome to yorkietalk..i hope someone can help you |
Hi there...Congrats on your new baby...From what I know of separation anxiety, the one this you don't want to do is make a big deal when you have to leave. This sets them up for problems seperating from you. Chewy is from a pet store...More then likely a Puppy Mill. I didn't leave him for a few months because we live out in the sticks and to go any where would be too long a time for a young puppy... WHen I finally did leave him I just put him in his create and didn't even make eye cantact with him, he whined and it broke my heart but i was so matter of fact. I also TRY not to make to big a deal when I come back...It is SO HARD to leave them! I would put him in his create or where ever it is you leave him for short times while your home to get him used to being away from you... I do this some times when I need to go upstairs to clean or shower... I never leave him more then a hour or so while I'm home but it helps him see I am coming back!!! Hope this helps!:D |
Luckily he doesn't bite. He actually has very little reaction to other people. It's just that, we are very aware that Yorkie sometimes have trachia problems, and if one of us leave the house he goes into something that resembles an asthma attack. Although my boyfriend and I knew that getting a puppy required a lot of responsibility, we didn't think that we weren't going to be able to go out to dinner or to the movies every once in a while. We're not neglectful parents and when we're home he is always in my arms or playing ball with his daddy - we just...need a life and get too heartbroken by his little face when we try to leave. |
Maizee used to have separation anxiety really bad as well. I got her in the summer when I was able to be with her most of the time, but when school started, that obviously posed a problem. Now, she is okay with staying in her room alone until I come back, but as soon as she hears me in the other room, she yips away until I let her out. |
How Are You Doing Hi, I was looking back to the threads last year and came upon yours. Hope everything went well with your new little fella and hopefully you will be back sharing good times with us all here at YT. Patti and Jack |
Talk to your vet..they can prescribe pills for anxiety for pups. Mine was on them when I brought him home at 5 1/2 mos..he was just like that, would climb out of the xpen, would cry all night, and when hubby made top for xpen, he couldn't get out, but would move it all over the laundry room floor...I don't know if it's because he flew from Germany to Pa, and then 2 weeks later from PA to here, or what, but, it was terrible...I gave in and let him start sleeping with my other 2(at the time) and he did fine then..he's now 2 1/2 and as sweet as can be...good luck! |
