Marking question and female personality
 

Hi all!

I'm not sure why this never occured to me before, but I just realized something very important... I've always owned female dogs, but have wanted a male yorkie for quite a while now. I'm going to look at a litter of puppies this weekend and just read about males marking their territory. I can not have this in my house!! For all you male-yorkie mammas (and daddies!), is marking a problem??? I was reading something about a male yorkie that is marking all over the house. If this is the case, I will definitely be getting a female. However, I've heard that females bond with male humans better than females (I would hate for the puppy to love my boyfriend more than me! :( ), and that they don't adapt to other dogs as well as male dogs do. I don't have any other dogs currently, but would like to get at least one more in the future. What are your experiences??

Neutered males don't usually "mark". I have a neutered male poodle and a neutered male yorkie and they don't mark. My daughter's 7 month old male yorkie has not been neutered yet and he marks. You could always use belly bands to help protect the house if you want a mle and don't want to neuter although you should neuter him unless you are planning ot breed him.

Females can also mark their territories , as for bounding , I have had males and females they were similar . If you have a male , have him neutered at a young age ( 6 months old ) .

wow,there is alot of questions on marking today:) I dont have males for that reason because Iv always heard of people that have problems with the marking even after having their males fixed and to be honest,this would be a probelm for me too so I have never wanted to push my luck and I got 2 females.I dont know why some people say that males are affectionate and that females arent because it all depends on the personality of the dog.Lady was supposed to be mine when we got her,but she fell for my husband,so we got Jess for me and she is my shadow:) She is the sweetest little girl ever and she is so much fun,I cant imagine any dog being MORE affectionate than Jess,its impossible! lol.
I am very partial to females because I find it so much easier to deal with 1 or 2 heats a year than having to deal with possible marking problems for ever..and from what Iv heard there are more males that mark (even after neutering) than males that dont,so males are just not for me.
Oh,there is another reason why I dont care for males..both females and males hump,but when a male humps his winkie comes out and that freaks me out! lol.Iv read lots of posts where a males winkie has been caught in the lipstick position..I just cant deal with all the male faults! lol.

If you neuter your male at a young age, you shouldn't really have any problems with marking territory or humping because they won't have reached sexual maturity yet. As far as preference, my 13 month old male yorkie loves my husband and I both equally. When we come home, we get on the floor to play with him and it's really cute because he tries to give us each an equal amount of playtime. Lol

Oh yeah, I forgot to say...my husband had always had female dogs growing up and I always had males, so we said that we would just wait until we found the yorkie that really captured our hearts regardless of its sex, and we found Miko after 2 months of looking.

I have a male and if I decide to have another , It will be a male .

Both my dogs (1 male &1 female) love me more than my husband... he, he. but that's because I wash, feed, groom, train, etc. his only responsibility is brushing their teeth... My male is 7-8mths old and has been marking his territory since 5 months... however he usually does it outside but I have caught him trying in the house I would have definitley neutered him if we weren't planning on breeding. I have a male puppy and a female puppy. I'm gonna get the male puppy neutered right at 6 months so he doesn't start marking in the first place. Then hopefully he won't start. Good luck with your new puppy when you get it.

Bailey marked 2x ( in others house that had dogs) never at home,,, but hes was about 5 months old then, I got him fixed at 6 months and he hasn't done it since!! :D ..
This was my BIGGEST worry with getting a male,, the Horror stories... but both dogs that I know that do it alot.. are not fixed! :)

Susan- I just wanted to let you know also that the case of the female bonding more with the male in the house isn't always true. My female is my little lap dog. She wants to go everywhere I do and follows me around. Its also fun having a female because you can buy all those cute female clothes.
