Snorty/Honking Bark Hi- We're relatively new to the site. I was wondering if anyone elses Yorkie has a bark that has a honking, snorty sort of quality to it? I suppose that's the best way to describe it. This only happens with her loud barks...not little ones. The first portion of the bark is a "typical" bark sound, but as she is finishing each bark the last part is sort of a honking sound. I asked my vet and he said this would only be a concern if she was coughing and she is not coughing. Wednesday is her 9 month birthday and she has had this wierd bark since she started barking (around 5 months or so) just curious if anyone elses furbaby does this? Thanks in Advance! |
Hello, it is not uncommon for yorkies to make that sound. It could be reverse sneezing or collapsing trachea. Or it could be just the way she barks. ;) Don't be like me and assume the worst. Gus does this once in a while and I used to worry but it is just reverse sneezing. Here is a site that explains it better than I can. http://www.angelfire.com/on2/yorkies/medical.html Welcome to YT. :wavey: |
If it is reverse sneezing - "honking" and "snorting" are the terms that best describe it. My three dogs have all done this - it lasts only a minute or two and then it's over. It is absolutely nothing to worry about, and my dogs all seem to do it most when they get excited. (My Bichon does it almost every night when I first get home from work - he is so excited he just can't contain himself.) Good luck! Carol Jean |
Kizzy does this off and on. Mainly when she is asleep. But I had the vet ck her trachea when she was spayed. I also had them ck maggies but i've never heard her do it yet. It was nothing to worry about with them he said. So, now ive quit worrying, but when kizzy does it sometimes it still scares me just a little bit. |
Maizee has done this before too. The first time she did it, she was barking at some geese. I thought it was the geese making the sound! I freaked out when I found out it was her, but I took her to the vet and he said it was alright. I feel like running her to the vet for any weird noise she makes but, I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's normal to be concerned :) |
