Questions from newbie
 

Hi! I am new to this site and I already know that this is going to be a great resource for me. I am planning to get a pup and met with 2 breeders yesterday. I am in a delima as to which pup to get and hope you can give me some insights/ advice.

The first breeder has been breeding for 3 years, and prior to that she worked for a Yorkie breeder for 5 yrs. She has an 8-week, 1 lb female still available. She is a parti-colored Yorkie like her dad who is a European import. Dad is 3 lb and mom is 5 lb and according to the chart is saw on this site she will grow to be about 3 lb. She comes with a one-year health guarantee. She trembled most of the time I was holding her (and was not engaging; almost looked like she is scared) and the breeder said that's because the pup was nervous as she is not familiar with me.

The second breeder I met has been in the Yorkie business (showing and breeding) for 30 years. He was one of the first members of the YTCA. He has 9 pups from 3 litters. He has 2 females left; a 7 weeks old who is 1.6 lb and 5 weeks old who is 8 oz. They are both sired by the same AKC registered male champion but different moms. According to the chart the 7-week old will be about 4.5 lb and 5-week old about 2 lb (that is really "tiny"!). The older pup was very calm and engaging (sniffing and licking my hands) when I held her. The younger pup was asleep the whole time.

I would go for the 7 week old pup at the 2nd breeder. It sounds like she would be the best choice based on her response to you and based on her size. She might grow up to be a little bigger than you think, which is fine - you'll love your little girl no matter what weight she ends up being.

Both of our boys were playful and happy to be around us the first time we got to play with them, and they have stayed that way through today. At 12 weeks, one was 1.5 lbs and the other was 2 lbs, and they're both about 8 lbs now (2 years old). Those size prediction charts don't really amount to much.

I would be wary of the pup at the first breeder that was scared of you, and of the little one at the second breeder, especially if this will be your first Yorkie. When they are young and small, they can be prone to hypoglycemia, especially the tiny ones.

Is the breeder allowing the 8 week old to leave now...if so I would wait to get her..she is too small and not ready by her reactions...if she is keeping her for 3 or 4 more weeks, then she will no doubt be much more settled and outgoing..and have a bit of size on her..nothing worse then having a stressed out, sick puppy at the holidays...

As to the other 30 yr breeder, it is far too soon to select the best pup..good lluck

Thanks for your responses. The 8-week old and 7-week old will be ready to go around Christmas, so they would be about 10-11 weeks by then. The 5-week old will be ready to go the second week of January.

Although I have done a lot of research on Yorkies I still could not get a hang on the pricing. All I know is that the smaller the dog the more expensive. The 8-week and 5-week old are both $3500 and the 7-week old is $2500. Does that sound about right?

Holy cow... that's awful expensive.

I'm not sure what to tell you about the pricing. Fang and Errol were $600 a piece, but we live in the Midwest, where prices seem to be lower than elsewhere. Their parents/grandparents/great-grandparents were all AKC registered, but I don't think any were champions.

Oh - one other thing - they were both 12 weeks old before the breeder let them go, and Errol still had problems with hypoglycemia at that age.

AWFULLY expensive, yeeouch.

We have very experienced caring breeders here (at YorkieTalk) who offer great quality/healthy/cute dogs for $1,500. And that's TWICE what I paid for my healthy and adorable "pet quality" yorkie from a long-time breeder.

I know CA is expensive, and it's great you're doing your homework, and trying to find a reputable breeder...but I bet you can do better than that on price.

It sounds like you did your homework and have selected two reputable breeders with good quality healthy pups. If you are looking for a show dog, you would be using a different selection process, but since you are looking for a beloved companion who will be your faithful friend for the next 10 - 15+ years, I would visit each breeder's home sit down on the floor and let the pup choose me. Most of the time the REAL beauty of the yorkie lies beyond our sight and within his/her heart ... Good luck!:hearts-xx

It's your money but that's a lot of money for a pet.

I'm guessing the pup from breeder #1 is not used to being handled. Could indicate that it had been raised in a separaste building other than the house. You said it is tri colored with a european background, is it a Beiwer?

I can really relate to you since you are from california, i am too, and i had searched for along time as well and everyone here is right, the price here in california is beyond crazy its too expensive, believe me i think a dog more than 1300 is too much, for a house pet, i mean they are worth it believe me, but if you are going to be breeding or going to shows with her then pay the money for it, but man thats alot try to search more breeders in this site that can sell you a pup for less than that, i didnt get a yorkie i was, that was my whole plan, until i saw layla in the silky terrier page on this breeders page, and here i am 2 weeks away from getting my lil girl who wont be more than 3.5lbs, (sounds crazy for a silky size i know) but i only paid 800 +225 for shipping, so please the last thing u want to do is pay toooo much here in california
