AKC or CKC.. which is better? I found a puppy I really like that is CKC. Is there anything wrong with that one? Should I look for only AKC? Not sure where I should have posted this so if it is the wrong place can the mods move it please. |
Depends on which CKC...there's two. Canadian Kennel Club is fine, their standards are almost identical to AKC. Continental Kennel Club is less desireable. |
It all depends...... CKC may mean Canadian Kennel Club or Continential Kennel Club. The Canadian Club is good, they keep pedigree records just as the AKC. The Continental Kennel Club is not always looked on favorably. They make it a lot easier to register a dog. They are a favorite with puppymills so they can avoid all the AKC DNA requirements. They will also register without any background information at all! But there are some beautiful puppies that are CKC so it does not mean that they are all bad -- just be careful. I would stick with AKC. |
You might have opened up a can of worms. I like AKC because from what I have read about CKC, their standards are less stringent than AKC. i imagine, like the others have said, that it depends on which CKC it is. There are some beautiful CKC dogs out there tho. i guess what it boils down to is personal preference. |
Eh, since he is going to be pet-only (I am assuming) it doesn't matter either way. |

I had no idea what CKC was!! My husband brought me Nico and handed me some CKC papers (not the canadian one). I love him JUST THE SAME (except for this potty training issue but we are dealing with that, ARENT WE NICO???) It wasn't until after we acquired him that I found out what CKC was and how it wasnt really looked favorable upon. Our Cocker is AKC and he's a great dog...but if you just want them as pets, does it really matter? Do your home work like you normally would and then go from there... |
I am a CKC breeder. When I was looking to aquire my female (who is CKC, our male is CKC and AKC) I looked for a dog a desired, not a piece of paper. If I'd ever had the intention to show, I would have definately continued looking to find a desireable AKC registered bitch instead, but that wasn't the case. I actually would love to get into agility one day (like, when I have more time than I do now)--CKC does host those events--I went to a few (with the breeder of one of our males) when I was in the learning process and liked what I saw. I think it is important that you look for a good breeder, regardless of registry--I have seen first hand that the bad ones can slip though loopholes just as easy with AKC as with the "lesser" registries. And yes, I realize that statement may invoke the "well-if-you-breed-AKC-and-get-caught-doing-that" speach, but you know, that's just it, some of these breeders don't get caught, so you can get screwed anyway you go if you aren't careful. I'll tell you something that may shock you. We ran across a miller who bred both AKC and CKC. Horrendous conditions, kept about 50 dogs in a chicken house! We reported the couple to AKC and CKC and their facilities were investigated by both and they surrendered their dogs in the end. CKC was the first to contact me and arrive to investigate the situation.:p |
The registry is about as honest as the breeder. That is just my theory. If you want to show defintely buy an AKC dog, but do your homework. |
I had no idea about the Clubs when I was looking for my Yorkie. Pepper is CKC, as long as they were somewhere registered, I thought it was ok. I never sent in his papers, He's a pet, soon to be neutered... He's healthy as can be, standard size, good body structure, no problems with double teeth and all. |

I agree. It's just a registry. they don't come out to check to see if the pup came from the two dogs it is said to have come from. Except in the case of the Parti colored yorkies. Those the AKC does DNA. Not sure if the other registries do. |
My pup is CKC as I am from Canada. I like to give the business to a Canadian breeder. This breeder is 8 hours from me and I have already met three people in my town that have Yorkie's from her. She has an excellent reputation and my dog has an amazing temperment! :) |
