Puppy Bath I just brought home my 11 week old yorkie Maximus from the breeder last Sunday at which point I bathed him and blew dry him, at the breeders advice I baby wiped him in between his bath....he had his vet check up on Friday (for 2nd round of shots), ....the vet all but threw me out of his office for bathing the puppy and told me in no way I should be bathng him this early....does this sound right? Also he told me babywipes..NO GOOD....warm rag only, it seems unsanitary no to bathe the puppy any advice? |
Wow! I think I like your vet except that maybe he needed to be a little gentler with explaining the reasons behind things. The little ones are just so fragile and don't have the immunities built up to protect them if they get a chill or whatever. Really for the first four months we are just trying to get them to eat and keep them alive and free from infections and bacteria that they are so susceptible to. It is actually okay not to bathe them and even when you do some people think once a week is too much beciuse it dries out their skin and isn't good for their coat. If you think about dogs in the wild, they are used to the oils and other things that occur naturally in their coats to keep them clean as well as their own hygiene wth licking and cleaning tha they do daily. I don't use the wipes but i am not sure why he wouldn't want you to use them except that they may contain some ingredient that isn'e healthy for puppies. Did he say? |
Congratulations on your new puppy !! It's sooo much fun just bringing them home - it's such a joy and a worry all rolled together !! Mostly joy though - yorkie babies are sooo sweet ! I don't know why your vet got so upset with you - that's pretty rough treatment over a bath....I gave both my girls baths very young - gentle doggie baby shampoo and made sure they were dried asap and kept warm... and mine never had any problems...I don't know if the wipes are ok on a puppies skin - I've heard of them but never used them - but lots of people with young puppies have bathed their babies without getting in trouble at the Vets ! Sometimes a puppy comes to you and HAS to be bathed ...good luck with your new baby !! |
New Yorkie bath I too have a new yorkie, 12 wks and have had him a week. He has had 2 baths, once to clean his body and once to clean his feet from an accident. My vet also told me no to the baths for at least a month but to use unscented baby wipes with aloe vera which I have been using and they are great. She said that brushing him daily and cleaning his eyes daily will be fine for now. |
He actually likes his bath Maximus actually seemed to enjoy getting a bath at the time, and since the vet said no to baby wipes I use "puppy wipes" everyday to clean his body and a warm rag for his face before I brush him. I think that the puppy wipes are basically overpriced baby wipes....but I am following orders...LOL, I just found out my baby has a collapsed trachea :( :( :( so I am waiitng till he is done with his medicine (10 days) before I will try to maybe give him a quick rinse, without telling the vet... :D |
Over Bathed Omg... when I first got TinyBaci I bathed him everyday...then I noticed him itching constantly. I looked it up here when i discovered this site and many YT-ers only recommmended bathing monthy..I was like oh cr@p! So now I just bathe TinyBaci when he is stinky...when he poos or pees I wash his bum, I can't help it....I was disgusted when he had poopies stuck to the fur on his bum before. So I still give it a wash when he does his business |
Yeah, if you bathe them too often, they will get skin problems like dryness, flaking, itching. I also wipe my yorkie when he pees or poos so that he can be clean, but I bathe him every 2 weeks with mild shampoo and conditioner. |
I use these on Cordelia.http://www.petsmart.com/media/ps/ima...4161_130ff.jpg I give Cordelia a bath every other week and take her to the groomers once a month. She is 4 months old now. |
I started giving Oreo a bath at 10 weeks and he did fine. And him and Ginger have been getting a bath either every week or twice a week and their skin is not dry, flaky or they are not itchy.. (maybe because i have them on Missing Link & Innova) .. i guess it all depends on the dog as well. |
