Choking Coughing Sound Hi, I am new to Yorkie forum (just got my baby last week), he is 11 weeks old and is great, he went to get his second set of shots on Friday...which he did not enjoy :(....but then started with this hairball, coughing sound on early Sunday morning....it sounded as if he was choking on something but I knew he had been in his crate and couldn't have gotten to anything. He did it 2 more times that morning at which point I rubbed his thorat and it seemed okay. Last night he was choking all night and I was about to go to the emergency vet till it subsided, my boyfirend is now home with him and said it started again...we are going to the vet tonight...but does anyone have any input....I have read up and think it may be reverse sneezing but it is more then 3x a day?....help...I feel so sad for my baby. |
Gioia is doing this noise , my vet told me it was collapse trachea . |
Poor baby !! I don't have advise but you said he got his shots THEN started this ? Could it be an allergic reaction ? That's awfully young to have a collapsed trachea - your vet could see if thats the problem - but it sounds awful no matter what it is - I hope the vet can help you...Good luck at the Doctor !! |
She could have picked up kennel cough at the vet. Collapsed trachea usually doesn't show up until middle age I was told. Does anyone think differently? My Chai just got over it and it was a dry cough with a gag at the end. |
Maximus still choking.... Maximus ( my puppy) had gotten the shot for kennel cough at the breeders..could he still have contracted it from the vets office?, also the night of the shot he threw up but the vet said that is not that unusaual with vaccines but to make sure he eats or at least drinks water with a tsp. of sugar in it so he doesn't get a hypoglycemic episode. I am just nervous....lol...I feel like I have read every possible thing it could be and still no answers...lol, figured you guys would know better then anyone. And quick questions, I gave Maximus a bath when I first got him home and again later that week (I got scolded by the vet)...supposedly you're not supposed to bathe then this young...only use warm water on a towel or puppy wipes, this seems a little unsaniatary....anyone have any info? |
Hi , I am sending you this www.vetsurgerycentral.com/tracheal_collapse.htm My vet told me that there is no specific age for have it . It can be as a pup or an adult . |
Thank You Thank You for the information, I am getting worried now reading about the collapsed trachnea...I hope he doesn't need surgery he is so little :( .....only 2.4 lbs. I will let you know what the doctor says...thanks for the commenst and support Samantha & Maximus |
Sincerly hope the best for your little one and hope it is not that. It is always scary when they are sick . Vet knows best . |
It sounds like kennel cough. Both my yorkies had it and it does sound like they are trying to spit up a hairball. Gus did get the symptoms shortly after getting the shot for it. It could be something else but don't start worrying yet. |
Also, the cough always got worse at night. |
Bella got Kennel Cough after about a week with us and has been on antibiotics for 3 weeks, just ended. Some days were good and others were real bad especially at night. The vet said the kennel cough can last up to 30 days. It does sound like a hairball and is the worst at night or early morning. |
Has anyone heard anything about the vet visit here ? Hope your baby is ok - Kennel cough does take forever to completely go away - our cocker got it from the groomer - but it's very treatable....I'm hoping the vet says the coughing is from something minor ... |
Maximus..... :( Okay.... we went to the vet yesterday with Maximus...turns out he has a collapsed trachea so he is on medication and had to get a penicilin shot....I have no idea how he could have gotten this because I haven't put a collar on him yet since he's too young to go out and he only plays in the living room which I have gated off from the rest of the house....i will be doing some intensive research today...lol...and hopefully everything will turn out okay. Thanks for all the suggestions you guys. |
OH SHOOT !! That's really a shame ! If you want to talk to someone who has a little one that also has a collapsed trachea - please pm me and I can hook you up with her - she found out about 8 months ago and has a very small little boy - I'm so sorry !!! |
I am so sorry about Maximus . I really hoped It wasn't that . |
I just read you post , I am so sorry about baby Maximus . Hope he'll be ok . |
2nd opinion Just wanted to let you all know...I am going to go for a second opinion tonight because the more I read about collapsed trachea...the more it seems an x-ray should of been done rather then just listening to his breathing. Maybe the doctor knows better and can tell but reverse sneezing is SO similar I would like an x-ray performed and an additonal opinion....wish me and maximus luck....I'll keep everyone posted |
I think you are correct to get the second opinion. |
Skin biting and Coughing My puppy Kodi is 13 weeks old. 2 weeks ago he started biting and scratching CONSTANTLY! I had him treated for fleas (I live in Florida and fleas are bad here) but he didn't have fleas and continued to get worse. I took him to a vet (the one at our local PetSmart) who said he probably had an allergy (my breeder said the same thing) and gave him an antihistamine. He did not get better so I took him to another, private vet (I don't like the PetSmart vet-he didn't even do any tests) who diagnosed the scabies (skin mites) with a test and gave him a shot. He will need 2 more shots over the next month. He is biting and scratching much less but hasn't stopped completely. He has pulled out most of his fur on his hindquarters and tail and has developed a little cough that ends with a gag. He doesn't do it all the time and it does soumd like a hairball. I figured he probably had hair in his throat from pulling his hair out. Now I'm worried that the cough might be related to something else. I got skin mites from Kodi and I've been itching right along with him. Has anyone had any experience with this? I also bought a product called Dermasil that I mix with his shampoo and bath him with it 1x per week for 3 weeks. |

Dsf3...Have you posted in health about this ? This sounds like it could use it's own thread so you can have people who may be familar with this write you back...There's someone who got their puppy from Brazil and she had mites - they were VERY HARD to get rid of and it takes a month for all the treatment if I recall correctly ... |
Maximus....2nd Opinion better then the first Hi all....Maximus and I went to another vet yesterday and by his X-Ray's he feels that he DOESN'T have a collapsed trachea...he thinks it may be kennel cough. He advised me to keep him on the medicine that the first doctor gave me (because it is an antibiotic and cough suppressant) and then come back in 10 days if the cough hasn't gotten better...he says these meds should take care of the kennel cough if that is indeed what it is. If not I have to go back and he said they will have to put a endoscope down his throat to see whats going on..but he is still very little to do that. I am hoping he is right and it is only kennel cough...he said by feeling his outside the trachea seems okay and the lymph nodes are swollen (symptom of kennel cough) so let's keep our fibgers crossed....Thanks all for the support and concern. |
I hope Maximus will be well soon . Gazou is sending Maximus lots and lots of Yorkie hugs . |
THAT's GREAT NEWS !!! Way to go - |
choking noise I am so happy that your puppy will be alright, you did the right thing by getting a second opinion. Years ago when I adopted my pom she was making a choking noise. I thought she was going to die so barefoot in my old pjs and covered in house paint, I rushed her to the closest vet. I burst through the door shouting "My dog is dying!!!!!" The receptionist put her finger in my dog's mouth and gently pushed on the roof of her mouth. My dog stopped "choking" right away. :D The vet saw me and explained it was a "collapsed pallet". The top back of her throat just hung down and needed to be pushed back up. She continued to have this problem about twice a month but I then knew how to fix it. I googled this and could not find any info. Perhaps the term he used "collapsed pallet" was not the medical term for it. Respectfully, cyn Driving the grammatically correct insane, one posting at a time. |
