At what age do you leave them in the house and not confined? While I was at the grocery store today, Joey jumped out of his playpen. I have several choices, covering the pen, putting him in his kennel, enclosing him in kitchen or bathroom, or just let him stay in open living room/dinning/kitchen area while I'm gone. He’s 4 months old and very good about using pee pads as well as not chewing things. At what age do you leave them in the house and not confined when your gone? Thanks. Nancy |
as soon as you can trust them... .... lexi still messes up, but what am i to do. i think she was 6 months old when i gave her the run of the house...dont really remember though... |
TJ and Roxy were 1.5 years old when they were ''allowed" to have free run (downstairs) when left alone. It really depends. Although, my opinion and remembering when mine were that young that they tended to 'regress' (potty, etc...) when they had too much space and this was when I was home to supervise. And again, I guess it depends on how much space is actually free run. My house is kinda large so for Roxy and TJ it was too much free run - back then! Now, they are good! Good Luck! |
I think it depends on the dog. Some can be trusted at 6 months, and some never. I've owned yorkies that never 100% potty trained, and the two I have now I trust completely. You may be lucky and be able to trust yours at 4 months. :) |

Britney was about a year old and Brooklyn is 8 or so months and he is still confined. I'm afraid he'll chew on cords and such if he's loose. :rolleyes: |
free run My dogs are 2 1/2 years old. If I'm just running to the store for an hour or two I let them roam the house alone. However, I've come home to poop and pee and so I gate them in my small laundry room. They never leave a mess in their because their food dishes are in there. |
I started leaving Howie to have free run of the living room, dining room and kitchen when he was 8 months. At 4 months he would have been a hot mess running free! He took a little bit to get the hang of the pee pads. If yours is trained to go on thier pads and to not chew wires, furniture, etc. then let them roam! |
Thanks for all your answers. I’ve watched him closely for the first month I had him and after several weeks he didn’t really need his pen, (he was consistent with his pads) so I wasn’t aware he could jump out of it already. He must have been in a real frenzy. He’s really well behaved when I’m around, but it sounds like it’s too early to leave him alone. Nancy |
