Soon To Be New Yorkie Mom I'm getting a little female yorkie =] I'm so excited. But even though I have ready every possible thing on the internet about yorkies I still feel unprepared. Please post advice. Especially what to do before the puppy arrives and all the items I shoule make sure I have and all that. Thanks! |
welcome to the site.. you can NEVER feel prepare :) it must be what having a baby feels like! but you came to the right place.. any possible situation you find yourself in.. someone on here has been through it.... you really dont' need much when your baby comes home... she will probably be a bit upset day one and two.. layla was not a happy girl ... i imagine the breeder will give you some food she has been giving the puppies... a crate would be GREAT!! layla loved it when she came home.. felt safe and secure..and it would be great if the breeder would give you something from her home with the smell of the puppy's mom and her siblings.. layla STILL plays with the toy she got when she left. Good luck and remmeber that first night might not go so well. but we are here for support |
.. Thanks. What should I exect the first night? I didn't really think that they would be too upset. Should I keep her in the crate the first night or keep her in the bed with me? Any other things I should expect? I've never had a puppy before. I got the dog I have now when he was two and he was excited and wasn't upset at all. But he also used to be a hunting dog and wasnt used to the TLC we gave him. :aimeeyork |

Some things you need is an xpen to keep the puppy in or a gate to gate off an area. A small crate, baby blankets, a bed, dishes for food and water,Nutrical, shampoo and conditioner, a brush, a toothbrush and toothpaste, food, piddle pads if thats they way you are going to potty train. After you have had the pup a while you will want to get a harness and leash |
Potty Training etc My nieghbor used to breed collies and other like dogs. She came up with her own method of training and I dont think she ever even had to use a leash. I don't know how she did it but she will be helping me train mine I think. Its amazing though, they never leave the yard of course like every dog they try to push boundries but thats normal. |
Welcome to YT and congrats on the furbaby:) |
well Layla's first night was a dream.. i think she was so stressed out from the drive (9 hours) that she just slept through.. however the next night.. was a nightmare... she cried and cried... but if you want your puppy to be crate trained.. you have to start the first night.. will she cry? probably.. but she will get through it.. when she does.. take her out.. bring her outside... tell her to "hurry up" or whatever your command is... then bring her in... don't make a big deal about it... tell her "Crate" and in she goes... if she continues to cry.. don't take her outa gain for a few hours... layla had two bad nights of crying ALL night.. then she got the picture that this was what was happening.. and now some mornings i can't get her OUT of her crate she loves it so much... and chances are... you will be up a few times a night for a few months... layla is 8 months... and it wasn't until she was 5 or 6 months that she slept through. a hint for you.. take her food and water away by 8... we did 7.. but i hear a lot of people say 8.... then potty before bed and you should be good to go. keep the questions coming.. we will do our best to help you out. can't wait to see picutres of you new baby! |
another quick trick... you can start whenever.. but i'd wait until she is settled in your house and bit older... but we tie a bell to the door... i hear that eventually she'll get the hint and ring it when she needs to go out.. perhaps she is a slow learner  but i look forward to the day she gets the concept.. i think it will be great! so give it a try! |
the comfort pup dog bed was worth every cent. The first night I had Gracie (she was just 8 weeks), I put her in her crate inside her ex-pen. I left the crate door open, the ex-pen door closed. Inside the crate I put the comfort pup bed and turned it on. She slept all night, or at least she did not cry. She cried alot during the day for the first week or so, which is very normal. At that time, they have just been taken away from their pack and they fear being abandoned. Once they figure out that you come back after you leave, all will quiet down. Use the search feature here as there are lots of threads about what things to buy. I soon discovered that all you really need are pee pads, good food, water, a few toys, a comfy bed and a lot of love! Have fun getting the nursery ready! |
