Green Eyes 1 Attachment(s) I was searching for information on yorkies a while back and happened to read that when you take a picture of a yorkie and its eyes are green, that that is a sure sign that the yorkie has a silky coat. Has anyone else heard of this? Everytime that I take a picture of Toto his eyes are always green unless you get a side shot of him or he is just looking away from the camera. I usually have to do a little "artwork" on his photos! Here is a picture of Toto sporting his "green eyes". |
I am not so sure it really works. Even though the colors may correlate to coat colors, different colors can be obtained from the same dog in different angles. Here is a quote and link to check out: "When you take photos of animals, the red eye effect can be quite different. Animals have a reflective layer in the back of their eyes behind the retina called the tapetum. This layer enhances their night vision. The colour of the tapetum gives you blue, green, yellow, or white eye effect. With animals, the effect can have place even when the ambient light is sufficient to prevent it in humans. ... Tapetal color can vary to some extent with coat colour. Some animals, and a few dog and cat breeds (for instance, blue point siamese cats), have no tapetal pigmentation. These animals show a red reflex as humans. The color of the eyes in the picture also depends on the angle at which you take a photo. Taking pictures of the same animal from different positions of your camera may produce different results: "(Take a look at the site and you will see they get different color eyes from the same dog in different angles!) http://www.colorpilot.com/redeye_effect.html |
It seems to hold true for yorkies, not sure about other animals. i have one silky coat and one cotton, and the silky coat has green eyes and the other red in photos. |
Ummmm....good question! If I recall (will need to look back over pictures), but I think I have taken pictures of Mojo and he has had different colors (in different pictures)....so maybe it is the angle or maybe Mojo has a mixed coat??!!! |
My experience at dog shows and talking with show breeders is that seems to be true with Yorkies at least. We didn't discuss other breeds. Green eyes in pictures is a sign of a silk coated Yorkie. Congratulations! Their coats are so easy to take care of. |
Hmmm, I'm wondering if this is true. Howie's eyes used to show as blue in pictures, but recently they've been green. I thought it was just because of clothes he was wearing, etc. |
a green or blue eye flash is said to assure a silk coat, where as a gold or amber eye denotes a modified (also a black silk) and a red eye, a cotton or woolly coat. |
Grayson's eye's look green in pictures and to me his coat is as silky as can be. He is so soft! |
My breeder says green eye shine is a silk coat. |
2 Attachment(s) I've almost quit trying to take pictures of Titan bc of the green eye thing. And he does have a silky coat. |
I believe it . It is true with my four yorkies. |
1 Attachment(s) I noticed that when i take Nico's pic his eyes look blue. Is that the silky coat, too?? Can u see his blue eyes in this pictures...with his ears taped? |

Tucker has a silky coat and his eyes are green in his pictures. Maddie has a cotton coat and her eyes are red in her pictures. I think it holds pretty much true for the yorkie breed. |
hmmmmmmm... both my dogs are pretty silky, but actually Seymour is silkier. The weird thing is it seems the opposite of what I am reading...... Shelby's eyes are green on pics and Seymours are a purplish color.:aimeeyork |
