2 sets of teeth advice needed Can anybody give me advice....my little boy Mac has many problems, he is very small for his age, he is one next feb....he is monorchid, and has 2 sets of teeth. I have had him to the vet as they want to castrate him, and remove his baby teeth, however, he is very small, just under 1kilo.. He has always been small, but he does seem to have many problems.. My worry is that because he is small, would an op be safe.. My vet has suggested that they run a series of blood tests to see if he has any problems with his liver, and if it comes back with a high liver function test then he would never be able to be put to sleep for an op as it could make the liver fail, and the kidneys fail. He does eat well, but the vet has also suggested seeing a specialist with him regarding his size... I am wondering has anybody had any such problems, and what would you do? He runs the risk of getting cancer if his testicle is not removed, and i feel like i am in a no win situation with him. Any advice welcome  |
Chewy is 4 pounds, and he is 7 months. he just got his teeth out and neutered yeaterday. His blood work came back fine and so we went ahead. He had places where there were 2 rows of teeth also. He is doing well today. How many pounds is your yorkie??? |
surgery I have had a number of tinies spayed or neutered...it is scary, but all did well. I would be more concerned about the double teeth..they can cause problems for a tiny. If you trust your vet, I would have the surgery. Best wisehs... |
I would definitely start with a blood panel as your Vet suggested testing for liver kidney function and other things as well. It will give a better indication if he can tolerate an anesthesia. There are Vets that can do surgery on creatures as small as a small rabbit or even a hamster. As for his size, it could be something to do with glandular, hormonal or other reasons he hasn't grown. Some of these won't have a problem if he does goes under for surgery but the blood panel will give a bunch of info for a start. If everything looks like it could procede, definitely have him on an IV during the procedure. It helps keep him hydrated and will reduce the stress of the drugs involved as well as the surgery. Good luck with your baby and you are right, you are caught between a rock and a hard place. That's a very difficult call to make. |

I went to a hospital for my Nyx's spay because of her size she's barely 2lbs, and when I was questioning my regular vet about the procedure he just brushed me off. I knew then I wouldn't be entrusting my baby's life in his hands. I found a small animal specialist at a vet hospital and she got her procedure there. It was more expensive but worth my piece of mind. |
Oscar was 7mths and just 2.7lbs when he was neutered - he also had a double row of teeth and had 14 removed. We did the pre-op bloodwork and had him hooked up to IVs during the surgery - all went well and he was back home with me that night! Good luck to you and your little one! |
