Toilet training in new house. Hi all, More questions sorry but I just found this place and it is amazing I love my Yorkies so much they are my babies. It is so good to find so many other Yorkie Parents out there as nutty as me about my pups I thought I was the only 1!!!! My question is we move from Scotland to Burlington New Jersey next months and will be living with my sister. Here we have a big back garden all fenced in and when the dogs need the toilet they go to the back door or pester me to go out and I open the door they go out do their business then come back in. But my sister house has a back yard but no fence it is in a row or town houses and she cant put a fence up. So I will not be able to open the door to just let the dogs out to pee they will need to go out on a lead. While I walk them at least 3 times a day the thought of having to put a lead on everytime they need to go pee is to much. So my thoughts are.... 1) Buy 2 puppy pens and put them in a big circle round back door so I can let them out alone. Does anyone know of somewhere to buy 2 cheap pens? 2) Train them to pee on a puppy pad somewhere in the house. But I have no idea how to do this or even if a 3 and 5 year old could learn this. What do you think? Ruthx |
If they are already trained to go outside, I would not want to do the pad thing. It will be confusing for them. If you don't want to have to put them on a leash every time, I would find a couple of pens and put out there. You can probably get some pretty cheap from ebay. |
either that, or walk them as often as you can.....i know it gonna be rough during the cold months, but we have to do it.. |
not sure but wanted to say hi and welcome here im sure u will find lots of good info |
I live in a townhouse. Loki goes to the front door and I stand inside and let him out on a 26 foot flexi. He goes out about 10 feet to the grass, pees, then runs right back. But he's done that his whole life so you might want to work on some recall commands before you do this. But it works very well for us. The cold weather bothers me more than it bothers him. It takes longer to put the coat on and take it off than it does for him to go outside and pee for 20 seconds so we skip that unless there is snow. In the summer if it's nice weather I will let him out our side door where he has a little tie-out and I will hook him up and stand on the patio while he sniffs around the side yard. Our neighbors also use a tie-out rather than a flexi in the same way. (Don't worry none of us just leave our dogs outside, this is just for potty business.) Then we go for walks around the neighborhood during nice weather and I can usually get Loki to pee 3 or 4 times and ALWAYS poop so then he is nice and empty for a couple hours. |
For pens try www.petedge.com although shipping may be expensive. I think pens would work as long as you could secure them to the house. I worry they could be knocked over. We don't have that option since we have a front porch and a patio - no grass next to a door. It sounds like a good choice if you can figure out how to do it. |
