Questions about coarse puppy coat I have a question about a puppy I just purchased.... I have a 7 mo old Yorkie who I have had since June who had long, really fluffy but soft/smooth hair as a baby. I just purchased a 10 week old male yesterday to give to my mother for Christmas. I am a little concerned about his coat. I have read a lot of treads and info regarding silky/cottony coats. However, I am still a little unsure about this pups hair. His hair is probably only about 1/2 in. long and it almost has a brittle/coarse texture. His hair is not really thin, but it is a little sparse in my opinion (esp on his head). When I brought Gus (7 mo old) home @ 8 wks his hair was longer and thicker. Guess he has a cotton coat, but I think it is silky to the touch :)- I don't know too much about the breed, and i only have my 7 month old to use for coat comparison. My mother is a little concerned that he won't "look like Gus" with the longer, thicker coat. I told her they are all different. The new pup doesn't appear to be "red", but his legs are light tan, and Gus had a lot more black on him than the pup that eventually turned tan. I know this is confusing probably, but if anyone has any ideas of what he will look like or if his coat will indeed grow in length, please let me know. I will try to post a pic later. Thanks. |
I think it's very hard to predict what color and kind of coat the pup will turn out to have as adult. When I got my little one at 9 weeks, he was pitch black and brown on legs and very fluffy, his coat was unmanagable. Now, almost 4 months later, he's light brown on face, blond on head and ears, and silver everywhere else, and I swear some parts of his body are (OMG!) white - legs and chest. But the roots there appear dark grey. And his tail is almost black, still. He has the funniest coloring... and his coat appears silky now. I think you can't assume anything. |
the puppy coat goes through many changes...if your little one has a thick black coat at 7 months and hasnt begun to clear his head then he is more than likely a cotton coat (modified) this might help explain what to expect from your new pup http://yorkiepassion.com/coatcolorchanges.htm |
My concern is over the new puppy's coat. I know this sounds crazy, but I actually LOVE Gus' coat at 7 months!!! Even though it can matt sometimes, I think it is adorable :) LOL! Oh, I know I am biased!!! Again, I was just curious if any of you more experienced YT's would have any input regarding the new baby's coat..... Thanks! |
Feminvstr is a breeder. She has seen a lot of puppy coats. They dont get more experienced than her. |

Read the article at the beginning of this section about Yorkies Coats, Colors, and Growth When my dog was a pup - he had the absolute worst mess of hair I have ever seen. It was thin and very oily. And, you absolutely couldn't get a comb through it - and it hurt him when I tried. So - I started trimming off that terrible puppy hair as fast as his new hair grew in. And - this totally solved the problem for him. His new coat of hair is silky (but wavy) - not oily - and very easy to comb. And - it's much thicker and healthier looking. He' a little over a year old now - and has a nice coat of hair. It grows fast, but I have never let it grow long. So - who knows! Have faith! Carol Jean |
