What Should I Do??? My two daughters and I are anxiously awaiting our new Yorkie puppy at the end of May. Well . . . I just had the opportunity of a lifetime offered to me . . . a retail store that I frequent and that I would love to own has been offered to me. The deal is actually too good to pass up. My question is . . . can I train a new puppy and buy/operate a new retail business at the same time? I want to be fair to the puppy (Gia). Any advice or thoughts are welcome. I have learned so much from all of you the past few months. Thanks, Jane |
It will be more difficult to pottytrain a puppy while working full-time, but there are tons of members that are not available to spend 24/7 with their Yorkie puppies. If you can find a nice place for them to crate train (while at the store) that may work for you, as long as you remember to take your new puppy out every hour or so. Assuming you have other employees and you are not the only one at the store all the time... Good luck! |
A lot depends on how old your daughters are and if you have puppy help at home! Can you take him to work with you? If so, you'll need a playpen or large crate, as well as wee wee pads. Good luck on your new venture! What kind of retail shop is it? |
I would say yes and you go girl !! If it's your dream - you'll make it happen...there's lots of working people who have yorkie puppies - it's a little more work - and lots more guilt....(you'll hate leaving him/her :D ) but it sounds like that's too good to say no too...Good luck ! |
My vote ... go for it! The store and the Yorkie! After you have a routine they are very easy to take to work ... besides ... who's gonna tell you that Gia can't come to work?? You will be in charge! What a great opportunity! :) We find that for Toto, an X-pen set up on plastic [shower curtain, tarp, etc.] works wonderfully and is very portable. You can adjust the size and space permitting can give your baby plenty of space until she is trained and gets accustomed to a new setting! Good luck and do keep us updated! ;) |
If you can bring the puppy to the store it might actually be good for business! There are a couple of small businesses in my neighborhood where the owners bring their dogs in. I love it! It make the owners look so good & caring - I know I want to give them my busniess as a dog lover!!! Good luck with both new adventures!!!! :congrats: |
I agree with these guys 100%.. You will make it work... Many of us have the sam situations.. It might take her longer to get trained but having that puppy is definately worth it! |
Go for it. I own a Gift Gallery and I take Jack (7 months)with me every day. I have a space behind the counter that is about 12' by 12' and he has a bed, toys and a gate so he can't get out into the main showroom. My customers love it that they get greeted by a Yorkie, I even have a step for him so he can watch out the window and see the people come and go. I take him outside every couple of hours for a pee, and he loves the life. I say "lets go to work" and he stands ready for his leash. Next thing I know he will want a pay check and social security. I also have a outside cat at the store (she was a drop off) and she will come in with a customer, walk around with them, and then go out again, it is really cute. Good luck with the business, and if you decide to do it you won't regret it. |
I forgot to mention that I have been taking Jack since he was 8 weeks old, at first he was in his crate sleeping most of the time, but soon started to get the hang of things and became part of the daily routine. |
Sorry, it is early the brain is not functioning quickly. I forgot this. I also have a sign outside that says "Pets welcome, Children must be on Leash". |
Thanks for all the warm wishes. I am going to go for it. My daughters are teenagers so I think I will ask the breeder if she can keep our puppy (Gia) for two more weeks into June so that when we get her my daughters will be home from school. That should make the transition a little easier for us all. The store is small in space but there is enough room to set up an area for Gia at the store. I am going to count my blessings and get Gia and buy the store!!!! Did I mention that I am waiting for my divorce to be final. I guess this year is the year of changes in my life!!!! Thanks for all of the advice, I love this group!!!! |
I am so glad that you decided to do this. I read your last post and thought "Yep, been there, done that", except my teenagers were boys. What kind of business is it? Again, Good luck with your "new" life. |
