Recomended Shopping List for new Yorkie? While I haven't adopted my new puppy yet, I'm trying to research and plan everything I need. I was wondering if the helpful members here could possibly suggest some good products you recomend. From my research, I've figured out that I need a crate. I want to get a travel carrier for my puppy as well, is it possible to get a crate which can also serve as the travel carrier? Will this make the dog more comfortable during travel, or do I need seperate products? My concern isn't about spending more money on two products, but rather making the dog comfortable when traveling in a car or on a plane. Secondly, it seems I need a puppy play pen to leave the dog in during the day. My work is dog friendly so my hope is to get something which I can easily transport (or buy a second version of) and set it up in my office. What needs to go into this play pen? I need puppy pads or newspapers to let the puppy go, correct? Also a few toys? Do I put the crate in here or a seperate dog bed? Is a folding 8-sided crate better than a fixed box style crate? What about dog litter boxes? Someone suggested that this was doable for yorkies. Is it recomended, I would certianly prefer it but if it's not best for the dog I'd rather do the traditional taking the dog outside to eliminate. And what about feeding solutions? If on the occasional day I have to leave the dog at home while I'm at work (I only expect this to happen once or twice a month) should I get an auto-feeder? Speaking of feeding solutions, what do people recomend as good food for the puppy. I read using 1/4 wet canned food + 3/4 dry food was good, but I'm confused as wheter that's best for only adult dogs or also for puppies? And lastly (and certainly of high importance) what toys and treats do people recomend? Good leashes? Good grooming supplies? Anything else I'm leaving off here? Oh, and, P.S. is there any good website or resource to find a good vet hosipital? I live in Cambridge MA so I'd love some help if someone has some personal expereince? |
And lastly (and certainly of high importance) what toys and treats do people recomend? Good leashes? Good grooming supplies? Anything else I'm leaving off here? Well, I'd buy a "Pack N Play" playpen for the office. They are roomy yet compact. I'd buy plenty of bully sticks for treats and chewing. I'd buy the absolute softest latex squeek toys and several plush (stuffed animal) type toys with squeekers inside them. Of course, that is just for starters! |
Oh, I almost forgot, as far as the harness goes, Cindy H. aka Chattiesmom makes the most wonderful silk harnesses available anywhere. I absolutely LOVE them and wouldn't use anything else, they are beautiful and very high quality. It is the only harness that doesn't matt my yorkies. I bought one for my mom's fat toy poodle also! |
congrats on the upcoming arrival! as far as the food goes... i did not feed my puppy wet food... currently she is free fed (i leave the food out all day... if i fed her in "meals" she would never eat) and in the morning i give her a tsp of wet food with her Missing Link (a suppliment). Whatever you feed your dog.. wet or dry (dry is SO much better for their teeth) make sure it is completely natural with no bi-products. Also stay away from corn as a main ingredient as a lot of dogs are allergic to it. I feed Layla Blue Buffalo, but Merricks, Fromms, Chicken Soup, are all great foods... you can do a search on the site here for feeding ideas. Can't wait to see your new addition! |
Recomended Shopping List for new Yorkie ?......a Sugar Daddy ....cause you're going to shop till you drop :D GOOD LUCK to you and congratulations ! |
I just went through all this a few weeks ago so I know how you’re feeling! First of all, I bought a pack of receiving blankets that I took to the breeder and she rubbed the mother dog with them. I don’t know if it helped Joey, but it sure made me feel better knowing he had momma’s scent with him. I bought a cute car seat at Target, it looks similar to luggage on wheels. It’s the best purchase I made because it doubles as a bed. We also had a crate, but it’s too big and he would soil himself. I just keep the carrier next to my bed. At first he woke me up twice a night, but after 4 weeks he’s sleeping all night. When he wakes me I take him into bathroom where there is a pee pad and food and water. Breeder said that food should be available at all times. If he doesn’t go after 3 minutes he goes back in carrier, he learned very quickly to go. The bathroom’s small so it’s easy to just keep putting him back on his pad. Now after he’s done, he walks back to carrier and tries to get in! If he’s whinny the carrier has a zipper around it and I can just unzip it enough to put my hand in and comfort him a little. (He licks my hand off.) Usually it takes less than a minute to settle him down. Dogs are pack animals and he just wants to know I’m there. I also found a cute stuffed animal that plays a lullaby that I keep in there. He loves it. I found some boot trays at the dollar store. They’re about the size of a cookie sheet and are make of plastic. I put a pee pad on them and top with a piece of newspaper. Joey like his pad changed every time or he’ll go someplace else, so this way all I have to do is change the newspaper. It also solves the problem of him going on the edge of the paper and it landing on floor because the tray has a lip on it so he centers himself more. Don’t overlook the dollar store for extra toys, the more toys they have the less they’ll bother your things and rotate toys so they don’t get bored. Also, bitter apple spray works great for discouraging chewing on your things. We keep a regular pet bed in a playpen, but he's doing so well with the potty training that he doesn't spend much time in playpen. Most importantly FIND A GOOD BREEDER and find out what foods, grooming supplies she recommends. Good luck to you! Nancy |
I would recommend dog bones that last. There is a starters kit that you can get from just about anywhere. This will help their teeth stay healthy and will keep them from chewing things they are not suppose to. Just make sure they are digestable. There is a stuffed dog that has a sound of a heartbeat. I can't remember the name, but look on the fun and toys forum. I heard good things about it, but have not purchased one. I bought several petstages products when I first got Rosie and she loves them. She still plays with them. A kong or a busy buddy would be good too. You can freeze peanut butter in the kong or put cheerios in the busy buddy. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Enjoy your little one!!!! |
Thank you everyone. Well, I went shopping at Pet Smart, spent over $300 and now I think my yorkie has more goodies, treats and comfort items to keep him happy for a while. He's sitting here next to me in bed, on the pad that goes in his carrier. i took it out for him. I think he's pretty tired. he had a really long day, leaving his mommy and friend dogs. I'm waiting for him to signal to go to the bathroom though, I don't want him to make a mistake in my bed! Things I read said I should put him in a crate at night. However, when he was home he slept in a bed so I think at least for the first few nights I'm going to have him sleep in my bed so he isn't too traumatized. |
