Transporting Your Yorkie If you are planning to take your Yorkshire Terrier somewhere via car, it is advisable to put him in a pet carrier, either soft or hard. While your Yorkie may growl for attention or try to escape the carrier, it is the safest position for it. While you may see many owners let their big dogs roam around the car while driving, it is dangerous. While you may be the safest driver in the world, not everyone else is. If someone rear ends you or you need to suddenly brake hard, your Yorkie could end up flying, which may result in serious injury or even death for your pet if it is not in a carrier of some sort. If your Yorkie is in your lap while driving, the force of an airbag deployment may also be potentially fatal. I prefer to put my Yorkie in a soft carrier with his blanket and a "comfort item", such as one of my tee shirts or one of his toys. You can also keep your Yorkie occupied with a bone or other treat during the trip. I also put the carrier on the floor of the car, as putting the carrier on the seat could still lead to injury as most carriers are not able to be fastened in via a seat belt. I usually angle the carrier and position the front seat (if I do not have a passenger besides my Yorkie) so that the carrier is snug and will not roll. Early on in being a transport, I have accidentally made the carrier roll in the front seat area due to braking too hard. Remember safety first, as you will not want to know later on that you could have prevented an accident. Please be careful out there! http://www.yorkietalk.com/index.php?...ng_your_yorkie |
I would like to purchase a carrier like a bookbag that I can use to carry my puppy. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Rocky's mom |
Agree 100% My inlaws who are in their 80s built a small platform on top of their center consol of their car and thats where their little dog rides all the time, sitting loose up there. Trying to tell them its dangerous for their pet to ride in that position unfortunely is like talking to a brick wall. Thank god they don't drive that much anymore. |
     Princess can't go for car rides without being in her car seat. They don't really like them, but in my car it's a must. Click it or stay home! That's what I say!!! :D :D :D They all want us to hold them, but it's better to be safe. :) |
I have a solid black one like this one. Most important thing is to make sure it's airline approved. My Rocky is only 4 lbs so this size is large enough. I also have traveled with him in a small plastic Petmate which you can get from PetSmart. If you choose a soft carrier might be a good idea to take Rocky in it when you go to the post office, grocery store or heck even around the house. You want him to be use to it and not have the plane ride be his first experience. |
Sorry forgot the link to one they are selling on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Chihuahua-Pet-Fa...QQcmdZViewItem |
Are car seats a safe alternative? How about the kind that attach to the center armrest and seat belts? anyone have any close calls or accidents in any of these? http://www.hunterk9.com/site/870877/product/339 |
When taking my Rocky & Daisy in the car I use our small plastic Petmate carrier from Petsmart. At the top of the carrier it has slot for the seat belt to slide threw. I like the feeling they are 100% enclosed while being in the car. |
I wasn't aware that there are car seats for dogs. Where can I get one? |
There was a thread about this a few weeks ago, and I know that there were some mixed feelings on whether or not a carrier or car seat was necessary. For me, it is essential that Olivia is in a carseat. I think my bf got ours at PetSmart, and I know that they're sold there. I'm not willing to take the chance that I get into an accident; Olivia wouldn't have a chance if I were. My carseat has three straps and can be used with any seat that has a head rest. Unfortunately, my backseats don't have head rests, so Olivia is in the passenger seat up front. I would prefer to have her in the back because the airbags can also be a hazard, but I at least have the seat is back as far as possible. There is a leash/harness hook so that your baby can't jump out. At first Olivia would try to get out or give me the most sad, pathetic eyes, but I stuck to my ground and made her stay in there. Now she usually sleeps, and if she is nervous for some reason, I pet her to calm her down, but never take her out of it. Like it was mentioned earlier in the thread- you can be the safest driver in the world, but you can't control the other people on the road. I think Gerry (Chewysmom) has some car seats on her website, but I'm not sure what kinds. I would highly recommend a car seat to anyone who travels with their yorkie and doesn't have a passenger in the car to hang onto their little one. |
Suggestion... If you are looking for a carrier that is a back-pack, tote, messengar stlye but ALSO can be a safety seat in a car, Celltei is who you go to! :aimeeyork  I have the Active Backpak-o-pet and it work wonders for our 2 yorkie pups! They are safe and comfy... ;) We even leave the top open so they can see out becauase there is a "leash" you can hook them to inside of the carrier that prevents them from jumping out! :p Celltei thinks of it all... :-) Check 'em out... :) |
Guppy loves this! Outward Hound" Car Booster Seat I got this brand seat from Petsmart for Guppy, but the one I purchased has an addition section underneath that has a blow up pillow in it. He gets very antsy if he can't see out the window, but this seat boosts him way up there. He can see out, the booster seat wraps around the regular seat for safety and has a clip that you can attach to a harness to hold your little one in place. There is also a mesh front that holds his toys and also acts as a barrier if you stop fast. Guppy really loves his seat. I placed a fuzzy mat in the bottom and he either site sees or sleeps on the one hour trip to work with me each day. |
Alphy always gets out. He either wiggles out of his harness or pulls the strap out of the clasp. :( |
Great post:thumbup:   Mine don't go anywhere without their carseat, just like my skinkids have to be buckled up. |
Right now Lacy has a Snoozer Console Lookout Carseat. http://www.gwlittle.com/prod/Car-Sea...okout_347.aspx It doesn't really fit my console that well though and she's just almost too big for it really. But she just loves to ride in it. I just ordered her a new carseat though that should be in next week. It is a Snooker Lookout car seat in pink that actually sits down in the seat. http://www.gwlittle.com/prod/Car-Sea...-Seat_348.aspx I really like this microsuede one though...maybe I'll call in the morning and if they haven't already shipped my order, I'll change it to this. I love the pink one http://www.gwlittle.com/prod/Car-Sea...-Seat_530.aspx |
