I am new to the yorkie world and am a little confused at why these pups cost sooo much money. I bought my little Irie for 600.00 and it included AKC papers. I really want another pup for Irie to hang out with, but I can't really afford it now.

So my questions is why are they soo much money????

These puppies are so delicate that the breeders have to put a lot of money into their care. Also, the breeders keep them longer than most other breeds bc they are so tiny. The result is increased cost to the breeder. Thus they have to charge more to try to recoup some of their expenses. Also, good 'ole economics 101 is in play here: supply and demand. Yorkies are either the most popular, or second most popular, breed of dog in the US. The higher the demand, the more breeders can charge.

I was a little shocked at first when I started "shopping" for my yorkie. I don't know why they cost as much as they do, but I already have learned that they are well worth it!!!

I also thought maybe they were higher because yorkie litters are typically small. I wondered why they were so much higher than other breeds when I first started looking at them too

That's a good point that I forgot to mention. So much money goes into a pregnant bitch. If she only has one or 2 babies, you have to charge a lot in order to cover expenses.

Hopefully you will be able to save up and get a yorkie baby. You can find some for more reasonable prices if you look. My male was onlly $600. That is a really good price for a yorkie. No matter what they cost though they are worth every penny. They really are a special breed of dog

Yorkie litters demand extra cares . A reputable breeder will never hesitate to place the well being of mommy and puppies before everything else .

I've heard all the breeder explanations for where the money "goes", and it never adds up to anywhere NEAR the price of the pups. Noone will convince me that the price of yorkies hasn't become inflated due to simple "supply and demand".

I do think they're horribly over-priced. And yet, on the other side of the coin, totally worth it. Does that make sense?! :p

I agree with you but when breeders have such a small litter anyway and then it is not uncommon to lose a puppy they have to recoup their costs somehow

Maybe I'm just out of it. Is this what maltese and chis and ALL toy dogs are running for these days???

I dont know about Chis Ive never priced them but maltese prices are lower than yorkies

I am a beginner and don't plan on breading my pup any time soon (most likely never) but if I ever did I wouldn't make people pay these prices. I have relatives that want a yorkie but can't spend 600-1000 on the pup....Its just not fair IMO..

600? that was a great price. mine were 1200 and that is the cost in my area

My question to you is do you think it unreasonable to charge $200 for a dog like a lab? You might think that that is a stupid question because we are dealing with Yorkies, but look at it from this stand point. Say it costs about the same to breed and welp a litter of labs as it does Yorkies (Yes it cost more to feed the labs, but usually Yorkie breeders will take their dog to the vet more times during pregnancy, so we're going with the cost is the same) Okay the lab has 12 pups (labs litters range from 6 to 17 pups so 9 is a nice middle number) So at $200 a pup for 12 pups the breeder gets $2400. Now a Yorkie has 3 pups (if your lucky) and the breeder gets $800 a pup, so that breeder also gets $2400 for the litter. Their costs are about the same, so shouldn't they get the same income?

Now I know that when you look at the cost of producing a litter it never adds up to the price of the pup; however, there are tons of cost that are never mentioned on those. Like the cost of showing the parent dogs to make sure that they are up to standard and worth breeding. The time that the breeder puts into the parent dogs and the puppies (we spend at least 2 complete hours a day just playing with our pups, heck that should be worth at least minimum wage, so you could figure $10 a day everyday for 12 weeks). The cost to house the puppies. We had to hand feed our pups from 3 weeks on, so we spent quite a bit on puppy formula. The costs of registering the pups.

We spent $1000 for our Roxi but she is so worth 10 times that in the happiness she has given us.

Most of the persons I know will pay $600.00 or less for a pup . The same persons will breed and sell for more then that even if their Yorkies are of very poor quality .

Its very easy to always complaint about the high prices of puppies .
