Spooked puppy? I had this funny situation today (weird funny), I need advice! I take Pepper for a walk every morning, I aim at the full hour, differently paced walk, I let him sniff stuff and say hi to his doggie friends if we meet any... It's not a 'power walk' from Dog Whisperer, but I walk fast at times. He usually enjoys it and walks nicely at my side. BUT... Sometimes he gets spooked by something, stops, sits down with tail between legs - I swear he looks like something scared him... I can't point out what though  He doesn't want to walk or what?. Is he being silly? Tired? I usually end up picking him up but I can tell he's all scared coz he shivers..... I know he can't be cold, I check his ear tips... Are 1 hour walks too long for him? Any advice?? I want himt o enjoy walks and he's always so happy when I take his leash... what's wrong then... |
How old and how big is he? |
Maybe hes tired? |
He might smell something that spooks him. Dogs have a very sensitive sense of smell and maybe he is sensing "danger" -- --where I live in the country it could be a wild animal -- but if you live in town, maybe he smelled a "thug" |
He's 5.5 mo old and a little over 4 lbs. Maybe I overdid with walking, I'll watch him and the situations that get him spooked.... At the beginning he was afraid of leaves on the ground, esp if moving with wind. Or a piece of tape flopping in the air. Should I get down down to his level and see what's scaring him and I'm missing from my 5'6'' feet ?? LOL :) |
IMO a 1 hour walk is to long for him at his age. Better would be 3 walks at 20 minutes. He also needs to discover his environment and learn that things are not as dangerous as he thinks or feels. He needs plenty of encouragement with time to get used to a thing, sound or smell. Mitzi is 9 y.o. and still gets scared easily. We moved from an appartment in the city to a house in a remote area with a big fenced in back yard. We are living here for over 1 1/2 years now and now she slowly starts to go around in the back yard by herself. Before she used to sit at the door shaking and looking miserable with this 'mommie pleeeeeaaaase don't make me go there' - look. Give him time and lotsa love and he will get braver.... :aimeeyork |
I would think a 1 hour walk would be a little hard on a dog at any age. |
I have to agree that an hour is probably too long for our little pups. As far as being spooked - dogs are funny. They, apparently, are very superstitious. The leaves were blowing when pup stepped on something sharp, therefore leaves are scary (they might hurt your paw). Mom was looking the other way and jerked just a little too hard on the leash at the same time the tape was blowing. Therefore, there is no telling what Mom might do to you when trash is blowing. You get the idea. In other words, you may never know what spooks your pup. As a general rule, though, I'm told it's best to "jolly them along" and not pick them up and molly-coddle them. |
My two youngest dogs are 4 months and 8 months and could outwalk me any day of the week!! They have duracell batteries I suppose lol..does your pup act like this at the same spot in your walk? Or at the same time frame...like say after 30 mins? I cant imagine outwalking my dogs...nope lol..I wish I could wear them out!! Dawn |
