This is the list I refer to the most: http://mooreshaven.com/pets/dogs/saf...foodslist.html |
I've seen bones mentioned a few times, and I'm not sure I agree with this 100%...COOKED bones are very bad to give dogs because they can splinter, but RAW bones are actually really good for them. The marrow is especially good for them since it's filled with lots of nutrients and the bone gives them calcium. As long as the bone is big enough that they won't choke, and you take it away before it gets too small, I think it's ok. That's my opinion anyway...:) |
My yorkie is 8 months old and chews like crazy. If nylabones are bad, what is a good alternative that I can give her?? |
raisins, macademia nuts, cow hooves very hard it can break teeth |
Another one to remember especially with the holidays coming up is turkey skin, I cant remember why but I remember hearing it was another bad one for dogs. |
good to know My yt just loves red delicious apple bits. I try not to give her too much so it does not upset her tummy. :woof: and no seeds. that is very dangerous. |

romeo got very sick from mac nuts. :( |
I thought the nyla-bones are good. Are they good or bad? I give Max those little carrots - they come prepeeled, washed, etc. A couple of time a day, I just pop one out of the fridge and he's so happy. They also keep for a long time in a container in the fridge. He also loves apple pieces to chew on. They're healthy and very good for him to chew on. I also just stick to flossies and some other Merrick chew stick - I forget the name. I have to be very careful with him because he seems to have a delicate stomach, so I keep it simple. He loves Happy Hips - those are his treats for when he goes on the paper, and I buy him simple, organic treats - nothing spicy or with too many ingredients. I found something called Bijon's Friches - swet potato fries for dogs - the only ingredient is sweet potatoes. He also eats only dog food, except for a drop of my morning oatmeal, so we share Mommy's breakfast. I find this makes his stomach behave and my life easier. Judy |

Tis the Season! Let's not forget POINSETTA PLANTS! They are so pretty this time of the year.... but VERY dangerous for animals and small children. Could be fatal if eaten!:animal-pa |
There are tons of house plants that are not good for dogs. And pretty much any plant that comes from bulbs are not good, lillies, tulips iris |
Here is also info on other bad things your furkids can get into.. including metals, pesticides, solvents and other chemicals, and bacterial, animal, and plant-derived toxins. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51842 |
MISTLETOE is bad also I have attached the article: PET POISON TIP: NO CATS & DOGS UNDER THE MISTLETOE, PLEASE! While it may be nice to run into your sweetie under this traditional holiday plant, mistletoe can be potentially toxic to our animal companions. Found throughout the United States, American mistletoe is actually a parasitic plant that lives off a variety of different tree species. If ingested in large enough quantities, mistletoe can potentially produce gastrointestinal irritation in pets, excessive thirst and urination, a drop in blood pressure and heart rate, seizures, coma and even death. According to our experts at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), however, most animal ingestions involve small quantities—not more than the amount found in a sprig or two—and typically result in mild stomach upset that resolves with little or no treatment. Remember, if you suspect that your pet has ingested a potentially toxic substance, contact your local veterinarian or the APCC at (888) 426-4435. For more pet poison prevention tips, visit ASPCA.org. |
What about those bigger cow hooves? |
This thread is making me paranoid... lol. I do feed Howie rawhides sometimes b/c he loves them, but I always watch him very closely. I would never leave one with him while I wasn't home. |
Thanks everyone for adding things!! |
No Turkey! I took Bailey to the Vet's AGAIN today because she hasn't been feeling well for the past few weeks & the first thing the vet asked is if I had given her Turkey on Thanksgiving? well yes, I gave her a small bite. Turkey is a huge no-no. The chemical in turkey that makes people sleepy is very toxic to dogs especially small dogs. And in large quanities can kill them.:( Bailey isn't sick because of her bite of Turkey but I thought it was a good thing to pass along, especially because of the holiday season. Michele & Bailey |
Turkey skin causes pancreatis. |
Now there is availible a new type of Greenies that is said to be completely digestable, do you think they are unsafe like the old Greenies? |

Yep absolutly, raw meaty bones (soft bones covered in meat) can be consumed completly and if you like you can give hard bones such as beef bones for them to chew on but these should not be consumed. I agree with just about everything else mentioned although turkey is fine, its just the skin that is not the best although OK in very small quantities. |

Im stumped on the tomatoes.....my vet said they are okay???? |
What about fresh Bing cherries and blueberries? Ziggy adores both and has never gotten sick. I know you have to be careful not to let them eat the cherry pit as it contains cyanide. This includes peach pits and apricot pits as well. Also, was baby food mentioned yet? A lot of it is bad because it is seasoned with onion powder or onion salt. I think everyone knows that anything onion is bad.:thumbdown |

Oh I also feed Bing cherries to my babies...hope its okay! |

I am not saying this is 100% true, I do know fox news covered it and many vets were advising patients of this discovery. Keep in mine Iams makes Eukaneuba, which in that same letter we were told that the chemical used to preserve a typical car/turck tire was found in Eukaneuba to give it a longer shelf life....... Scary     |
