Transitions for new babies I have had my Mimi for 2 1/2 weeks. She is three and a half years old. I bought her from a reputable breeder. She isn't very playful with her toys just yet. I do play "get the belly" with her on the floor. She is responding to this play time. What suggestions do you have to give me to encourage her? What are your experiences with new fur babies?:confused: How long did it take your furbaby to adjust to her/his new forever home? |
I'm no expert by far, but you said she's 3-1/2 years old and you just got her from a breeder.....maybe she never learned how to play with people, or wasn't around people much at all, possibly? Was she an early retirement from breeding? I know mine love toys, even my 5 year old. But I've had both of mine since they were puppies. It seemed to take about a week before either got adjusted to my home. Try different toys. Might even want to take an old sock, and tie a knot in it, see if she'll play with that. I know both of mine love stuffed animals, ropes with knots in both ends...ah the list could go on forever. Since you do have an older dog, and not a puppy, it may take more time for adjustment. But again, I'm not an expert, I just have 2 yorkies. One is 5 months, the other is 5 years. |
Every dog is different. My parents got their Yorkie from a breeder when he was about 3 years old. He had been picked on by the bigger dogs (and probably not treated very well by the humans either). He is now 13 and never really learned to play. I got both of mine a year ago. Prince was 5 and Angel was about 2 1/2. Prince started playing the first night I brought him home. Angel has just started playing in the past month or so. She will play with me or sometimes with Prince, but not with toys. She hovers over them but doesn't play with them. She is very small and I think they carried her everywhere. I don't think she had much time to play - but she sure learned to snuggle! :p I see my parents at least a couple of times a month. Now that their dog is exposed to other dogs his size he is learning to play a little bit. He won't play with them but Mom says he does something new a day or two after they visit. She says it looks like he is trying to imitate some of the things they do. |
What type of toys are you using? My Jazzy (a 4 yo Shih Tzu) I got as a rescue when she was 3 yo. We had dog toys and bones for her, but she never played with them. I just chalked it up to she had never learned to play with toys. After we had her about 2 months, one day she came running out of my daughter's room with a stuffed animal--all excited! I made a big deal out of it and threw the stuffed animal and Jazzy immediately fetched it and brought it back--all excited. We then discovered she did not like any type of toy that made any type of noise. She also only likes soft, fuzzy toys. Since this discovery, she has not stopped playing with toys. She now has a toy bin full of her "type" of toys. We also discovered that while she could care less about the rubber type dog bones or Greenies, she loves pigs ears, bully sticks and raw hide bones. My 4 month old Yorkie--Mickey, will play with anything. She loves toys that squeak and make noise, while poor Jazzy runs for cover. Maybe you have not found your dogs "type" of toy yet??? |
Thank you so much for your impute. I will give it some more time for her to become adjusted. I think she had a lot more interaction with other dogs than people. So I will just keep on trying new things too. Thank you again. |
BNot is absolutely right. If dogs aren't exposed to toys as puppies, they often don't have a clue what to do with them. They have to be taught. Joey is the opposite of Jazzy. He adores toys that squeak. So, as JazzyGirl said, keep an eye on that - your pup may or may not want toys that squeaks. |
welcome hun and congrats on ur new addition to ur family give her time and just keep loving her and playing she will adjust to you in time like u said she may have been more used to dgos than people |
