Which anesthesia is best? I'm trying to get my duck in a row to get Adonis neutered, and one tooth removed. I want to make SURE I get them to use the right anesthesia. I did a search on the forums and only found like 3 things. One was gas, another was Isoflourin (sp?) and the other was Sevofluorine (sp). If something goes wrong, someone will have to come bury me too. This boy is my heart and soul, as I live alone and he's been my #1 companion for the last 5 years. I do trust my vet, but I want to make double sure they use the right stuff! I trust you all a lot better though, lol. I know once I make the appointment, I will be a nervous wreck till its all over with, and he's up and going again. Are they're any other anesthesia besides these 2, and the gas? Have anyone had problems after any of these have been used? Gawd, I'm so scared. |
My vet used Isoflourin on Bengi and everything went well. That's one of the safest ones these days. My vet said that there is another one, but I can't remember the name, and this one is the "safest", although there is not much difference with Isoflourin but it is a LOT more expensive and the cost is not justified. Even with the safest anesthesia there is a small risk percentage, but if you trust your vet and your baby is healthly you should believe everything will be fine. |
Thanks for the reassurance on this one. I will see if they carry it there. If not, I will pay whatever it is to have them order it. I'm taking NO chance on loosing him. |
I just went through this! I was a wreck. I paid extra for my vet to use the sevo (i think it was only like $50 more, but I could be wrong). The little extra expense was worth it to me. Best wishes to him for a speedy recovery. |
My vet used Isoflourine on both mine. Just make sure when you are discussing the surgery with your vet that they only use GAS anesthetic, no IV anesthetic, and that they DO NOT use a barbituate injection, which is also dangerous to our little ones. With gas, they wake up a lot sooner. With an IV, they are knocked out the whole day! Gas is always better. GOOD LUCK to your little one! Oh, and make sure you get the pre-anesthetic blood workup done to check for liver and kidney functions. And if you want peace of mind, ask them to call you with the results of the blood test BEFORE they do the surgery. I have heard some people that they paid for the blood work, but the vet didn't wait for the results of the bloodwork before starting the surgery. You could even take your little one in a day or two before to get the blood checked if you really wanted to. But the same day is fine, too. Just make sure they get the results of the test before starting surgery. |
Thanks so much. I have another question, is isoflurane gas? I really dont' want to sound stupid on the phone. A good friend of my neices works at this place. She is the one that helps my vet get the animals ready for surgery. |

Ahhh ok RLC got ya! Thank you all so much for the information. I did a search, but didn't learn everything I wanted to learn from the posts I saw. I tried to call, and they aren't opened today. My vet has a regular vet clinic, then also runs a spay/neuter clinic in a separate location. Gawd....I'm so nervous about this. He's 5 years old, I should have done this a long time ago, but I thought I wanted to stud him out. I never did that. Then when I got Venus, I thought of breeding them. After seeing 3 this past 2 weeks, loose their female breeding.....changed my mind quick! I couldn't handle the risk...I'd be a nervous wreck the whole preg! I will have Venus spayed next, as she's only 5 months old now. I want to get Adonis done sooner, just in case Venus goes into heat earlier than I expected. Thank you all SO much for the information. Now when I call, at least I will know what I'm talking about. |
The barbituates are what put them down too deep and sometimes they can't be brought out of it and that is why they pass away. The new gases are safer. |
Ok, so I'll definitly know what to request them do, and also NOT do too. Althought you all have educated me on this, I'm still scared chitless. I've had him so long, and he's been my buddy, my pal and my best freind too. He might get through this, but before I even take him, I'll probably have a cardiac arrest thinking about this. |
Ok, I called, and asked a buttload of questions. Got answers, but I don't know one of these meds from another. Oh, btw, this is a discount spay/neuter clinic, but MY vet runs it, along with her vet clinic in town too. They do use the Isoflourine. But they also use something called Atropine & Ace as a pre- anethestic. They also use Telazol, to knock them down so they can put the tube in their throat. She said niether of these were barbituate. But I don't know one med from another, myself. Price is great, but I wanted to find out from here what you all know about these meds? If they are dangerous.....screw the price! Help, someone who knows anything about this stuff!! |
While answering Bnot ? Could you also let me know if putting a tube down their throat is necessary? Lost my baby to collapsing trachea so am very leary of having anything done when my new baby gets ready. |
