Caring for a Yorkie
 

We will be getting our Yorkie in about three weeks and this is our first Yorkie. Does anyone know good sites on care and information? At what age do you first bathe, what is the best type of brush to use, any other helpful tips?

You've found a great resource here. You can bathe a Yorkie at three weeks, and you can bathe them when you feel they need it, but of course not too often as it gives them dry skin. Just make sure you use a shampoo that is gentle, like baby shampoo or special dog-formulated shampoo. They have good brushes at the pet store, we got ours at Petco, just ask the people there what kind of brush is good, I don't exactly know how to explain what kind of brush we have. :)

Welcome to YorkieTalk, Amber, and congratulations on getting your new baby! I know you must be very excited. Like fasteddie said, you can bathe them anytime you feel they need it ... I, personally, can't stand it if Toto smells like a dog!! :) Our breeder gave us "Coat Handlers" shampoo and conditioner [that's what she uses on all her show dogs] and that's been a year ago and I haven't had to buy shampoo yet! It's concentrated and you dilute it with distilled water! I really like it and since I bathe Toto at least once a week, it has never caused any skin problems. I bought all kinds of brushes ... found that the one that works best is a round, boar bristle brush that I have had laying around the house for over twenty years!! :p If you begin brushing while they are real young, they get used to it .... Toto will get on my lap when she see's me getting her grooming stuff ready and will even lie on her back for me to brush her!!! She has a long coat and it tangles easily so I try to brush her every day ... dilute conditioner and "mist" it as you brush and it will help prevent breakage of the hair! We haven't yet chosen a name for our baby girl although we have a list of about 15-20 names that we like including Zoe, Bella, Lexie, Mackenzie, Kaya, and Maisy so I don't know. Any advice on naming our baby girl?

Also, I appreciate all of the advice so far. :)

Welcome Amber to the site. I hope you are enjoying your new dog. I have Charlie and he was my first yorkie and the first dog I have ever owned. :)

Just choose a name that you like amber, and perhaps one that she responds to. I like Zoe, Bella, Lexie, and Mackenzie as names, or wait a little bit after you get her and then name her. Sometimes it takes a bit to see if the name fits her personality.

Congrads Amber, You just got the LOve of your life. you might put the names in a hat and pick one, i like them all. three of my babies are laying on the floor sleeping. the other two must be in bed as its kinda cool in Southern Indiana today. We have Missy and Bobo our Yorkies. then Bruizer and Maizy chihuahuas. Sir Baron and Lady Schauzie Mini Schnauzers, Precious, Mugs, and Jazzie J. our Pugs.and Fancy and Dewy our maltese. I've said a million times im glad i can live in the country I love dogs.

What is the best brush for a yorkie that can be used to brush a puppy as well. I'd like to get her accustomed to being brushed early?

to groom try a slicker brush, -a wired bristled brush used to groom most coat types.
use a soft straight bristled slicker brush. and a double sided stainless steel comb.

I have FINALLY found a brush that Higgins will tolerate: It's for humans, made by Conair, and is the small round one with plastic "pins" that have soft tips on them. At times he even seems to like being brushed now. :)
