Help! My pups are 5 weeks old. What is a good thing to feed them to introduce them to dog food? |
I like Royal Canine 33 puppy. Puppies seem to love it as their first keeble. First you need to introduce it as a soup like mixture, let it soak in hot water. Then start adding a few pieces of solid (assuming their teeth are in) |
I use Iams dry puppy food and add warm water and a few dry pieces here and there. Their teeth are in. I'm just concerned about if they get enough to eat because I hardly ever see them eating. I have to put mom in her dog crate or the other room or she'll eat their food. My vet said to introduce the pups at 2weeks old to powdered milk, baby cereal, chopped up dry dog food and warm water. I was spoon feeding them this. Should they still get fed this? |
1 Attachment(s) Try a creep feeder, it keeps the mom out of the pups food. Take a milk crate, cut 2 puppy sized holes in it (one on each side), weigh it down so mom can't knock it over. I'm trying to send you a pic of one that I found in a book. :) :) :) |
No, they don't have to continue on the cereal etc... unless instructed for a specific reason by your vet. You'll definitely want to keep mom out of there from eating their food. Perhaps let them have their playtime with mom outside of the food area? You'll want to keep dry food out at all times for the puppies. They'll nibble here and there. I like Royal Canine, because it's so good to them, mine just forgot about their "soup" They were fully weaned at 6 weeks. This is just what I do. Hope this helps. |

I soak the kibble to a water consistancy. It takes about 30 minutes to get soggy. I make several servings at once and refrigerate the rest. Then I add more water to make it watery. Some pups need to be coaxed by dipping your finger in the mush and finger feeding them at first. That is the initial introduction. After the puppies are use to licking it up I gradually lessen the water. About every 3 - 4 days I lessen the water. By a 10 day period the food will be an oatmeal consistancy. After about 2 1/2 - 3 weeks they should be able to eat the kibble dry on their own. Don't forget, a bowl fresh water all the time. Good luck |
