Luxating Patella - Alternative to surgery? My one year old puppy has been skipping a lot on her walks lately, so I asked the vet about it. She said her kneecap was slipping. She didnt' seem worried. But I've read a lot about it and it looks like eventually it's something that might need surgery. I want to avoid this - does anyone have any more natural, less-expensive treatments they can recommend for correcting this? thanks! kendal |

In my opinion, I think many Vets want to recommend surgery too quickly on these little dogs. Where you do have to consider surgery is when as she gets older it becomes a problem which you want to watch for over the next few years. Problems can be where she isn't walking on that leg hardly at all or is hiding a lot due to pain in the leg. You will know if something is amiss. Many small breeds of dogs will go through their life just skipping on their walks. How serious it becomes and whether or not surgery is the best answer, will be a wait and see. |
My 1 year old has the same thing...Actually he will be a year old the 21st of this month...He was diagnosed with this LP 2 weeks ago...The doctor told me just to watch it...I talked to my breeder and she told me that normally you don't have much of a problem with it in small dogs like yorkies....Because of their weight.. and because they are soooo small. I shouldn't have to do the surgery....It normally does not get to that point...Because they are small dogs and the bones can handle it....I have my lil Tiny man on a med called Cosequin...It is supost to help with his bones....It is a lil pricey...But...I figured it couldn't hurt? |
