OMG! I can't believe she did this to me So there was a bag of Boston Market next to our trash receptacle and apparently it had a bone on top. Well I saw Ruby take it I chased her and she ran under the sofa. So I reach for her to get it away from her and the poop head kept striking at me with all might. I am so hurt. How could she snap at me like this , I mean she was pshyco. I am done with her for the day, this little thing. Should I consider her food agressive? She never does this with her regular food.:mad: |
My yorkie girls have never done this to me yet (crossing fingers). From the time I've had them I've practiced taking food right out of their mouth to prevent this from happening later on. I hope it works. Maybe you could start trying this. I think the trick is to show NO fear. They have to know your boss. I also have a pekingese and he pulled this crap when he was a pup. I wish I would have done this with him. He's a hardheaded little guy and it hurt my feelings so bad when he would do this. I try to remind myself that its their nature and you just have to try and teach them its not nice. Good Luck to you :animal36 |

Yep, I have. Cooper will take stuff, not necessarily food, that he is not supposed to have (and he knows it) and will run upstairs under the bed. He has snapped at me when I reach under there to take it. Now when this happens, I tell him BEFORE I reach under there, NO Cooper!! in my "I mean it" voice and he will walk away from it and then I take it. You can't let them think they are the boss, or the behavior will get worse. I think this is instinctive with them, and you just have to break them of it by not letting them get away with it. |
Rocky will occasionally do this with something he's not supposed to have either. He's picked up on the "drop it" command, and it always works with his toys. When it's something he shouldn't have (which is rare, because he's always been pretty good about only chewing his stuff) and if he does act mean, I close his mouth and tell him "No, Bad Dog" in my "mean voice". |
Teddy is starting to do this with me. He runs away with little things he finds, cause somehow as much as I clean he always seems to find something! So he'll run away, I have to chase him and he will put his 2 front paws int he way and hold his teeth together good so I won't take it out. I hold him facing downward cause then he has to let it go. He bites sometimes but not hard so I am working on it to make him stop.. |
It is food aggression - but maybe not so bad after all. You say she isn't this way with her regular food. I think she just found something that is really special... and she really wants to keep it. My dogs aren't aggressive with their food normally either - but you made me remember a couple times when they were - and it was also when they got something they usually don't get - and something they really wanted to keep - and almost always meat or a bone etc. ***** I certainly would never take it personally if my dogs growled at me or even snapped so that I would let them keep some prize that they had found. (This doesn't mean that I wouldn't take it away from them - depends on what it is) -- but I can understand their occasionally wanting to keep something. *** You just try to take my chocolate truffles away from me!!!!! Some dogs can be aggressive to bones and not food. I don't know why, but my dad's dog is like that also. Maybe it is because it is something they really want and don't want you to have whereas other food isn't as important or interesting to them. My cocker was like that too. She could care less about food but when it came to bones, you better watch out!! Ever since then I have trained all my dogs since they were young not to be food or bone aggressive. You will have to work with her on it, but she can overcome this bad habit. I would practice by holding a bone in your hand and letting her chew on it that way and teaching her to release anything when you tell her to. |

Ruby I am taking Ruby's side...there are times were have to stand up and fight for what is important...and Boston Market chicken is one of those things I would defend..go Ruby!!!! |
LOL Pat !! I agree :D :D :D ONCE I gave the girls each a real bone - omg - all we heard was little mean growling noises and each of them was quietly telling the others....DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.....(and they didn't !!) When they don't get yummy stuff like that - they can be VERY protective.... |
Pete will occasionally do this as well. He doesnt do it with normal food or treats, but if he gets something he's not supposed to have (usually because it could be dangerous for him to eat) he will growl and nip if I try to get it back. The other thing that worry's me about going after it is then he try's to swallow it without chewing and this can be even more dangerous. Luckily we've learned to tell him drop it and then ask if he wants a treat and he usually will, he's getting better. I heard of someone else on here talk about when their dog got something they werent supposed to she'd quickly grab a treat and say "deal or no deal" and their dog would drop what they had and go for the treat.:) Good Luck |
My Pom is aggressive when she has something she wants, especially if she is under the bed. Even if she justhas a cookie that she is supossed to have and I go to look under the bed she snarls at me. Yesterday morning Iwas tryig=ng to give her medicine for an upset stomach in the hall and as I tried to put it inher mouth she bit me soo hard right on the nail and the nail bed. I was beeding pretty bad and it still hurts like crazy. Most people probably wouldn't put up with this but I can't get rid of her and I just have to learn to avoid situations where she will bite. Fortunately she is missing a lot of teeth so she can't do real damage. If I try and take her food away while she is eating she is fine. So I know how upset you must be with Ruby. |
Lucy hasn't ever done that, but I think Rebel is going to be a different story. I stopped giving Lucy human food before I got Rebel but he likes to get stuff he shouldn't have and run with it. When you pick him up with whatever it is, he'll bite at you (10 weeks old!) I say his name in a stern voice and tap him on the nose with my index finger. He's MUCH better about it now, but he is so STUBBORN! |
yes lexi has done that on several occations. if she has something she shouldnt have and you try to take it away, she will bite.... |
