Longest you've left them alone. Just to get an impression of your thoughts..... How long is too long to leave a yorkie by him/herself - with food and water left out? With my schedule, I occasionally have to leave mine alone for 9 hours. Is this unacceptable? Unfair? Cruel? What is an average threshold time? |
What you should do is leave the bowl with water with him he cannot be 9 hours with out water. Thats what I do Becuase I go to work from 7a.m. to 3 p.m. and I leave Pebbles water Cuase shes by herself for 8 hours :) |
time In a perfect world 4 to 6 hours is ideal, but most people work and the time is longer. Make sure the area is big enough for bedding and food/water as you have done. A few people who have my dogs have pet nannies come at noon for a visit/walk/playtime..it costs, but it is wonderful for the Yorkie..these are people in the city, NY etc...but pet nannies are everywhere..even responsible neighbors help a few out with visits. |
I leave for work at 8am and get home at 6pm...Sammi is home alone during that time..She has a bowl of water and food down all the time...I personally do not feel it is cruel...There have been days during the week where I have taken the day off and all she wants to do is sleep...So I know when I am not home she sleeps also...I say 90% of the time I come home to unused wee wee pads, like she was sleeping all day and too busy to pee pee :) |
my guys at lucky they get left alone mabee 3 hours in a week kayko is a year and he has food and a water bottle in his cage brownie dont anymore |
When I first Started working, I left Oreo and Ginger alone for about 7 hours once, with no one with them.. but with someone checking up on them every 2-3 hours. Of course I left Plenty, Plenty of Water and Food. Since they have each other they always do fine, but theyre never alone now :) |
Max is in our kitchen every day from 7am - 3pm by himself...we leave water & food out for him, along with his bed, toys, & potty pad. His favorite game to play when he thinks we aren't watching is taking the towels off the handle of the oven. LOL |
[B][SIZE=2]How old is your baby that you leave alone for 9 hours? I surely hope they are NOT puppies. That is no way to train, bond and socialize a baby. I have been asked on dozens of occasions about how to house-train a Yorkie and my first suggestion is "Take time off work to be with them!" Sure they sleep, but they get no praise for good behavior or stimulation if no one is around when they are awake..I know we have to work, but, 9 hours away from them can make them needy unless the situation is gradually introduced. Maybe, a neighbor or friend could visit or a dog nanny could check on the babe at least once during those 9 hours..If I sound harsh, well, those are my opinions after several years of breeding and raising these babies.. |
1 Attachment(s) Oh, I understand. My little guy is 2.5 years old. And I am in full agreeance with you that younger puppies should have as much of your time as possible. I've long wanted to get my yorkie a friend, but I can't go ahead without knowing for sure that I can invest full attention. |
The longest we've left Fred alone is probably.. one hour. We keep him at my boyfriends house a lot and his mother is always with him and is totally in love with him! She leaves to work at 10 and my bf comes home from school at 11. Unless we go to the store, Fred always has someone to play with :) |
I can leave Sheila for 2-3 hours no problem. Whenever I came home it takes a bit for her to say hi so I know she's sleeping. When I'm at work she's at doggie daycare and I visit her every lunch if I don't have a lunch meeting. |
I can count on one hand how many times we've left ours alone for more than 4 or so hours. We just don't do it. If something comes up and we have to leave them alone for even that long we break our necks to get back home :D There is just no place else we'd rather be than right here at home with our little doggies:) It's a good thing we are homebodies:) |
Once I left Stewie for 14 hours. He wasn't destructive and dind't have a potty accident. I leave him alone at most 6 hours. He sleeps most of the time. I dont think it is cruel to leave your dog home alone while you're at work, especially if you can't make it home during lunch or afford to hire someone to visit them or put them in doggy daycare. I think if you leave your dog alone while you're at work you should make sure they have plenty of toys, food and water. Also, it would be ideal for them to have somewhere to get cozy and sleep while you're gone. Stewie loves his fur bear that is the same size as him. He fights and cuddles with it. |
Sorry, forgot to mention that the dog should definitely have a place to potty. I dont think its realistic to expect a puppy to hold it for longer than a few hours. |
