Scratching the walls? Stomper (5 months old) just started to scratch the walls in our kitchen only when we are away from the house. I'm not too happy since the walls are texturized and now need to be fixed! I'm not happy. I called my vet (over 25 years experience) about this behavior and she said that it is common for dogs to do this when they are teething...she said it will probably continue for another 6 months or so. She said that he might actually be biting on the walls!!! In the meantime, she said to put something against the walls to prevent it or move him to a different area. He might need to be moved to the garage and access to the backyard instead of the house! Have any of you heard of this? I've looked it up on the internet and it said that this could be a behavior problem - seperation anxiety. The vet said that when it is seperation anxiety they typically do it to the door you go in and out of or all over the furniture! |
chewing Stomper needs a pen while you are away..think about this..would you leave a toddler alone to entertain themselves all day? You can not cover all the walls and furniture..cords and carpets, door jams and window sills...get a pen. |

Pebbles scratches on the wall and sometimes bites the edges but im home so I can catch her but when im out she has no reach of the walls!:) Pebbles is 3 months and 2 weeks |
Our Jackson would eat and scratch the drywall. What we ended up doing is giving them, Jackson and his brother, the utility room as their room and went to our local hardware store and bought clear, plastic sheeting. My husband cut the sheeting so it covered two feet high on the walls. So, unless you really looked, you couldn't tell that we had plastic on the walls. Our two dogs now, Jordan and Skeeter don't scratch the walls. Jackson had severe separation anxiety. Good luck |
Mine ate the floor! If you should block your baby into a room like the bathroom with a gate across the doorway during the day, you might get a surprise when you get home. We did this with one of my Yorkies, Jerry, when we first got him, cuz it was the only room in the house without carpeting, and we thought he'd be fine. Well, he scratched under the gate, right through the hall carpet, the padding underneath, and the subflooring, in a circle about 6" across!!!! Then he chewed up the pieces of carpet he'd ripped up into about a million pieces. When we got home, I thought my husband would bust a blood vessel seeing the damage--but instead he just looked at me and burst out laughing because the silly dog looked so innocent sitting amidst the carnage. :D Laurie |
I have seen posts on here about yorkies chewing on the walls! I'm so thankful I haven't had that problem with mine! I also think a crate or playpen would be a good plan. Good luck...I hope you find a solution! |
Chewing on walls? Oh my! |
I agree that he needs a playpen. I got one of those in Petsupermarket ,you can shape it in so many shapes. Right now mine is an L shape.I have it in a corner.Cookie used to scratch the walls and our sliding door until he was about 6-7 months old and then he stopped totally. But when he did that is cause he had to take a poop. He's a little over a year old now so I leave him loose in our family room ,it has a gate that my hubby made. So he's free to run around there and I usually find him asleep on the sofa neck rest part. Genie |
Stomper was originally in the kitchen - blocked by two baby gates - about 5 1/2 feet tall. He figured his way out every day I was at work. That is obviously not an option since it doesn't work nor do I want him to get hurt. A crate is not an option since I am at work all day. Is the play pen covered so that he can't get out? How much do they cost? FYI...is scraping the walls a puppy thing or will he most likely do that forever? |
I have not had a problem with Mimi or Cookie getting out of the playpen. You can even put this one in an octagon shape .I'll try to find a picture of it so you can see which Im talking about. I have put Cookie & Mim in there when I need to clean the family room area or shampoo the rugs ... Genie |
Here is the one that looks like the one I have. The only difference is that mine is a gold color and I paid much more than getting it from Petedge! http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y200/gennel/pen.bmp |
He was able to climb/jump over a 5 1/2 foot baby gate I had in the kitchen. This doesn't look much higher than that! |
