Ears still down I was wondering if Teddy's ears will ever go up. He is almost 5 mos old and his ears are still down...is it too late? Either way I love him, but I was wondering.. |
From what others have posted on here in the past, I think they still might. Usually it takes until they're done teething, about 6 months. Emma's were both down until about 5.5-6 months. Then we had her groomed, and they shaved her ears-one went up! One still flops over, but I like her that way. You might also try taping them...do a search for more threads on this and I'm sure you'll find lots of info |
k thanks I will, Emma looks sooo cute lol |
1 Attachment(s) They might go up - have you shaved them? have you taped them? If you look at Rexy in the pix, his ears are down and he is now 9 months old, so they aren't going to stand. But we gave them every opportunity to stand by keeping them shaved, entirely from top to bottom, until he was 6 months old. We even taped them up, but they are just too "thick" to stand. They are pretty big too. We think he is absolutely adorable with "down" ears - but just like you, I wanted them to stand, if they would. However, now that his ears are down - we think he is just too cute! In fact, he gets more oohs and ahhs than Rowdy (with "up" ears)! Go figure!!! |
They might still go up, I would try taping them. He's a real cutie by the way:) |
1 Attachment(s) I don't know how to do the tape thing, and I'm scared about shaving his ears. Both his litter mates ears are up, but not his This pic is of his sister, see her ears are up |
3 Attachment(s) These are of his brother, ears also up. The last one is my Teddy at 12 wks, but his ears are the same |
i don't think it is too late. As I recall, Gracie was 4 months or more before I got hear ears to go up. One went up on it's own, the other I taped for 24 hours and voila! They look cute either way, the taping thing is up to you. |
1 Attachment(s) I think his ears will go up - if you shave them. You can get a beard/moustach trimmer at Walmart and it will do the trick - it won't cut his ears. If you are still afraid, take him to a groomer and have him/her shave his ears. Here is a picture of Rexy's ears when taped up. I taped each one individually and then taped them together so they would stand up. Some fold them like a taco and tape them that way - I'm not sure what way is best. |
Cute picture. I shave my puppies ears half way down, open them flat and use masking tape to tape them together. Masking tape won't hurt them if they chew on it. They should stay up. Give them a while to get strong when you tape them. If they fall down, retape them. |
Okay I am going to try the taping and see what happens... |
Remember though, you can't just tape them, without shaving them. The whole idea is to eleviate the weight on them and then tape them-the tape will adhere much better to the skin this way also. And as far as his siblings ears being up before and longer than your little guy's, don't worry. The leather of his ears simply may be thicker and heavier that his siblings...but shaving them and possibly taping them should give you better odds at getting them up. AND THE HAIR GROWS BACK FAST! ;) |
My Sam is 6 months old and his ears are still down. When he is excited they will raise about half way up, kind of looks like wings but thats it so far. His tail is longer than most Yorkies I have seen so I just figure he has enough energy to raise his tail and not enough for his ears too, haha. His tail is so funny, it sticks straight up when you have a toy he wants. |
Ears that are Flopped.... Hi, I can relate...my puppy Yorkie's ears were standing straight up when he came home with me and then suddenly around 4-5 months old his ears flopped. We had no idea why and just assumed they would go back up again on their own. We later learned that this was normal for some dogs, especially while teething and if the hair on the ears has not been shaved. By the time we learned what to do, it was too late for us to tape them. So when we got our second Yorkie we decided to have our groomer "tip" her ears and cut her nails because I was terrified to do it myself. It can be a scary thing to do yourself if you are not used to it, and I admit that the thought of a sharp object next to my baby's delicate ear was frightening to say the least. So I happily took her to a professional. Some people don't realize that you can take your little one to a groomer and have the ears shaved while you wait for a very small fee (my groomer charged $5.00) and I had it done every 2 weeks until we felt she was old enough to go in for the "works". I must add that I am not a groomer or a doggie expert...just a plain and simple Yorkie Lover. Also, as a very proud mommy I can't go without saying that my little boy is simply 'perfect' with one ear up and one ear down! I have added a link below for a website that has interesting Yorkie info, you can check it out for a 'step-by-step' description of the Ear Taping process: glassyorkies.homestead.com http://glassyorkies.homestead.com/ On the left side click on "Hypoglycemia" and scroll down about halfway, you'll see 'Taping The Ears' with details and photos. Hope this is helpful! P.S. One more thing... your puppy is so GORGEOUS! What a face! Best of Luck to you both! Yorkies are both amazing and very addicting, like potato chips you can't stop at one! :D |
You should try shaving them...I don't mean with a razor. Use clippers. It's very easy and it doesn't hurt them. Both Sadie and Lillies ears were up when I got them. I do realize that some never come up at all and I think they look adorable however, I perfer the ears up. Lillie is 5 months old now so I don't shave the entire ear...I just shave half of it..the inside and out. Just taping isn't going to work. The hair on their little ears will get heavy and weigh them down. I STILL shave the top 1/3rd of Sadies...she is 2 1/2 years old. |
