Is my baby underweight? Hi, Gizmo is almost four months old, but he only weighs 2 1/2 pounds. His mom weighs about 5, but I don't know about his dad. Is he doing okay, or should I feed him more? He's my first puppy, and I'm not sure when they are supposed to be "grown up". Any thoughts would be great. Thanks:aimeeyork Valerie |
Make sure you leave food and water out for him at all times since it sounds like he's on the small size. If you do that and he's still small, it's most likely just the size he's supposed to be. Lola was 2 1/2 pounds at 6 months old and is just a smidge bigger than that at almost 8 months. Some are just smaller than others and can come from normal size parents. |
Chewy is a slowwww gainer... he was 2 pounds at 3 months.... he is now only 4 pounds and is 6 months old. he has food and water all day long. The vet says he may not get much bigger. I was surprsed because I was told he would be around 7 pounds when I bought him. |
Little Bit is 3# and the vet told us to free feed her as well. He said he really didn't like that because it makes them harder to potty train but in the smaller dogs it was really the best way. Something about their stomachs don't hold enough to maintain stable blood sugar levels. |
I wouldn't worry. As long as he eats well, and acts "normal" then everything should be fine. Yorkies come in all shapes and sizes, so its hard to say that Gizmo is "underweight." He might just be a smaller size Yorkie. You can always "free feed" him like others have suggested that way he can eat all day long, but it does pose problems for potty training because it doesn't provide that schedule. Just fyi...Maci is 3lbs 6oz. right now, and she is just now 5 months. Her mom was 5lbs and her dad was 2.5lbs. |
Thanks for the info. I know that some can be small, but I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't malnurishing him or anything. I already have a bowl of dry food out for him all day, and I feed him canned food once a day. I did notice a difference in potty training after I started him on dry food and stopped his scheduled feeding. :) Thanks again, :aimeeyork Valerie PS How do I get my picture of Gizmo to show up on the side of my posts like everyone elses? |
Chewy has been potty trained since 4 months and I free feed... I take him out every hour and half to two hours... My hubby says that is not potty trained because he doesn't tell me when he has to go! But to me, if he isn't going in the house he is potty trained enough fro me!!!:D |
Hi, like everyone else said, leave water and food out all the time!! My one yorkie is 1 yr. 7 mths now and only weighs 2 lbs. she is completely healthy and happy. She only just gained those extra few onces that helped her reach 2 lbs. after being spayed. The low weight terrified me at first. My other yorkie who is 5 lbs is a smurf to me so Pia ( the 2 lb one) just amazes me. My vet suggested I give her licks of nutro-cal 2-3x a day just to be safe with her. You can get it at petsmart for like $8 Try not to worry your baby is fine :D |
I always watch the way their top of their back looks. If their back seems to get smaller right before their back legs I watch them and get them to eat more. My Me-me gets this when our Cloe hogs the food bowl too much. I have to make sure she eats enough. I try to free feed, but then Cloe empties the bowl every time she passes it. We are now taking Cloe out of the room so the three tiny ones can eat. |
That's not too bad for 4 mo that would make him some where around a 4 lb adult. I would just make sure that you are still feeding puppy food and to leave food out at all times for him. |
One of mine was 2.4 at 16 weeks and only went to 2.9lbs at 11 months. At a 13 months hit 3 lbs. His vet says he's full grown. His breeder estimated he would be 4-4.8lbs. full grown. He seems so tiny to me. Jessica |
The rule of thumb is that they usually double their weight they are at at three months of age. This has usually rang true, except with my last litter. I had one that stayed way smaller then we expected. They were happily surprised. |
