Getting Ready to Pick up Puppy-YOUNG Help
 

My breeder called me today. She said that my puppy is ready-she is almost 8 weeks old not quite. She said they would be between 8-10 weeks before ready. Not quite 8 weeks seems a little young...does anyone have experience with this? Are their potential problems? I can wait 1 more week...she would be 8 weeks/almost 9...would 1 more week and a couple of days make that much of a difference?

I got my puppy at almost 9 weeks and he came down with Giradia and Coccidia. I dont think that him being younger was the problem it was the enviroment that he was raised it. Other than that he is very playful and fun to have.

The breeders on here can give you better advice but it depends on size too. I think a bigger pup can leave the nest earlier but most recommend not less than 12 weeks for socialization purposes. A puppy learns a lot from his mother and his siblings. A smaller should stay even longer. No puppy is safe from illness, but an older one is usually easier because they have been eating in their own longer and they are just stronger and have had some shots.

i wouldnt have got my Rex so young but his mother pushed him away at 6 weeks! poor baby

Around here most breeders etc let their dogs go at 6 weeks of age. I thought it was nice that the breed I bought Paris from would NOT let her pups go until 8 weeks of age. My opinion is 8 to 10 weeks. In MY opinion 12 weeks is too long for a puppy and new owner to wait. In those days from 6 weeks to 12 weeks that is the most crucial days for you and your Yorkie to bond, learn each others says, get to know each other, and plus who wants to miss their new babies first few months?? I wouldnt. That would be like giving birth and then not being able to see your newborn until 3 months old. To me any dog should be ready to go to their new home by 8 to 10 weeks of age. A TINY puppy may need to be held back alittle longer but not to the extreme.

I know I was sent pictures every week of Paris as after she was born up until few days before I picked her up. That way I felt like I was a part of her first 8 weeks and watched her grow and develop into the little lady she is. If you blindly go into buying a 12 week old puppy you may not know what youre getting as alot of habits etc are learned in the first few months. Also at 12 weeks old the breeders routine, schedule and way things are done might be embedded into their little heads. I am happy about getting PAris at 8 weeks because she is still young enough I can see her grow from a puppy to a little lady and because I can teach her the ways of OUR home and how things go here.

I got Chachi when he was 7 going on 8 weeks and he became stressed and had diahrea problems. I really think it was because of his young age. I got my 2nd yorkie Jewels at 8 weeks and had no problems. I agree that 12 weeks is the ideal age to bring them home.

ALso forgot to mention that my little girl has never sat foot on ground. I dont believe any puppy under the age of 4 months should be exposed to areas where dogs with diseases or other things can cause illness. By 4 months they have received all their puppy vaccinations and are not as suseptable to disease etc. I take my babies outside WITH me and to stores etc but they do not come in contact with any grass, ground, dogs or anything of that nature.

I got Sheila at 8 weeks and had no problems. She is a small yorkie and around 3 pounds now at over 6 months. When I say no problems I mean none at all. She didn't even cry the 1st night. I got her from a reputable breedert hough that breeds for show but just as importantly to them for temperment.

I would wait a little longer if you can, even 1 more week would make a difference. I got Missy at 8weeks, a few days after having her home she had diariah then hyperglycimia (sp sorry) and then coccidia! All 3 before 12 weeks of age!

I was warned by many yorkie owners I should of waited till she was closer to 12weeks but the breeder said I could have her sooner and I was so anxious to get her I didnt wait. Well expensive lesson I learned and also very stressfull. Its so scary when your little baby gets sick, if you waited a week or so longer you might have less risks.

I learned my lesson with Missy so I made sure not to pick up Max till he was 12 weeks old, I had no problems with him at all and he was very socialized, he knew all kinds of yorkie tricks, like hiding bones etc.

I am sure she will be fine what ever you choose, but you will be less likely to come into any problems the longer you wait.

I have to agree with Missy's mommie on how scary it is AND expensive... We didn't know any better when we got Chanel, all my husbands cockers were brought home at 6 weeks...So we got Chanel at that age ....and she also had coccidia within days of coming home with us - It's contracted from the MOM but it was still scary - I didn't leave her side for a month

Other than that She was fine - just young and very small and full of spunk - GOOD LUCK with your new baby

I didn't know they got coccidia from their mom! I'm keeping my babies until 12 weeks with the exception of one that will be going about one week before that and that is only because the new owner lives pretty far away her husband has to get off of work. From everything that I have read I agree that 12 weeks is best for the pups AND for the new owners!

Yes...it happens at birth and if one puppy in the liter has it - they all do - at least THAT's what I was told ....we got Chanel from a breeder who claimed she didn't even know what it was when we told her - course that was a lie. She now has it on her contract that she is NOT responsible for any "parasites' ...meaning she is still selling sick puppies !!!

she's the breeder in Texas I wrote about in the Breeder section - she is bad news....sells ALL her puppies at 6 weeks...to anyone - I know this because 3 years ago - I was one of those people....

Gosh, I had better read up on that! I keep my dogs clean and healthy but I sure don't want my puppies going to new homes sick! I didn't know it happened at birth either! It's almost time for my pups vet check and first shots and I am going to have them tested and make sure they dont have that! Thanks for the info red98vet!!! :)
